Hi All,
Wondering if anyone else is having this problem with Dell.
I bought an Inspiron 1500 14 months ago. Early on I noted that the adapter dell sent would sometimes slip out if the laptop was touched. Then at 6 moths I started getting a message on power up -AC adapter wattage & type cannot be determined.- 2 weeks later the battery was drained and the system wouldn't recharge it.
I called Dell and asked for a new adapter as I felt that slipping out and message I got on power up meant the adapter was faulty. Dell said it was a battery problem and sent me a new one. The new battery was also not recognized by the laptop and therefore wouldn't charge.
I sent in the computer for possible mobo replacement and asked for a new adapter. They refused to give me an adapter but they did get the laptop working. Well here it is 2 mo after the warranty has expired and I'm having the same problem. Battery won't charge and dell's ac adapter isn't being recognized. Yesterday I bought a universal adapter 90 watts. It isn't recognized either so the battery won't charge.
The solution of buying a Dell adapter doesn't seem right because Dell is the one who gave me a faulty adapter to begin with. The tech site and forum for dell is down a lot. When I call they only want to sell me the extended warranty.
My question? Has anyone solved this problem by doing what I asked Dell to do in the first place? i give me a non faulty dell adapter. I have no problem spending the money for an adapter they should have provided in the first place, but I'm not convinced I won't get another bad dell adapter.
Any clues, or ideas. I'll post if I find a way out of this mess without having to buy the extended warranty.

Sounds like a possible power supply issue (on a guess). I know my 1501 throws up an error message on boot if the cord is connected but out of the laptop too much, but it's not really slipping out by itself. Hmm.

My power supply ws doing the same thing, it was because the end that hooked into the computer, the rubber was broken. Took my moms and all is well. Also made my computer run a lot faster too.

Thanks for the replies DR65OSE and de.1337,
I found several blogs and sites devoted to this dell adapter problem I've researched it and seems the only answer is buy the extended warranty. Thousands have been affected by the crap adapters dell knowinly sends to new customers and customers under warranty. Joining a class action suit could take yrs. So I'll buy the dell extended warranty smell like a big profit scam by Dell. But this will be my last dell.
