I recently purchased (Feb. 2008) a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Windows XP. After a few weeks I noticed that when I pushed the power button on the system would not load into Windows. The power button would be on but nothing else. When I pressed the Num Lk key no lights would come on either. Nothing would read from the hard drive. The screen would be just black as if the computer wasn't on at all. Now this would happen intermittently like one day if I pressed the power button it would start normally and the next time I tried to start it nothing would happen and this could be all in the same day. I had to press the power button again to shut it off and then hit the power button again to turn it on. After hours and days being on the phone with Dell they decided to replace my motherboard. Got a new motherboard and now the system won't turn off! I have a posessed computer! Again after long hours and long nights being on the phone with Dell they decide to send me another motherboard and processor, but when my items arrived only the processor came and the technician came back to my house to install the processor. STILL NOT POWERING OFF! I tried the diagnostics test and no errors come up. After fighting with Dell I finally got my wish for another brand new computer. Do you know that after 21 days after purchase Dell won't send you out a replacement system? I will never buy or recommend a Dell to anyone!!!! With all this said does anyone have any ideas on what could be the issue with this computer. Other than the system not turning off by using the start menu, (you actually have to shut it off by pressing the power button) it works great.

The policy in the USA is you should be able to return your machine within the first 30 days, no question asked.

After 21 straight days and 28 hrs of being on the phone with Dell tech support this is easier said than done. There was nothing but questions, and loading windows multiple times on my machine until I kept going up the ladder to get a manager to finally send me a new computer. It seems as though I still can't get an answer to my question.............Why won't it shut down? Every time I run the diagnostics test it tells me that Windows did not load properly. Do you want to start normally or in safe mode?

get ccleaner, which is free <a href = "http://www.ccleaner.com/">link[/URL] and run the registry cleaner and the other things. My dell 1520 would crash on putting it into sleep, i ran this, fixed the problem, maybe it will fix yours

This kind of problem is hard to say because there could be a lot of reasons. I would check in the log file, for example event viewer. This kind of problem is not easy to diagnose without being in front of the computer myself. I would suggest to get to somebody more knowledgeable and let him or her diagnose it.

Like I said before, if you buy in the US you should be able to return the system within 30 days no question asked. You could have done that and reorder. A hassle nevertheless, but at least you will get a working system.

Uhh, isn't the 30 days for the Satisfaction Guarantee? I believe you get like a year of warranty or something, depending on the plan chosen...

I'm not sure if you posted here to rant or to get help...

    In either case...

    1. No manufacturer will give you a new machine after their return period expires as it is simply to costly to replace every machine (and VERY bad for the environment so I'm very glad they don't). Instead they give you refurbished (aka as fixed) parts...

    2. You need to give us a LOT more information on this issue. Is it not shutting down on a fresh format of pure Windows XP? Or is this occuring after you load up all your apps and etc?

The problem sounds like an app or driver issue and nothing more...

Also, what is occuring during this time? Is the HDD LED flashing? Does your shift key trigger the shift LED (to show it hasn't hung)?
