I received my Inspiron 1520 on 11/13. Like almost everyone else, my system has the very annoying headphone jack interference. The day I received it I used the headphones (not knowing about the issue beforehand) and could hear the interference. I chatted with a dell tech support, and then connected to DellConnect, where they attempted to update my drivers, change my sound settings, have me run diagnostics, etc. Obviously this person did not know this is a widespread issue? I was connected with them for about an hour and a half and the only solution they could come up with before they had to 'go' was to reinstall windows. So, I researched a lot the past two weeks and found out the problem. Anyways, I think I am going to return my system. I will be in college next year and will be using the computer to record lectures, take notes, listen to music, etc, I'm sure using the headphone jack. I dont want to sound ungrateful, but when I spend $1,400 on a laptop that I will be using for the next 4 years, I should expect there to not be any major hardware problems. So, I'm here to see what your guys' opinions are. Do I return it for a refund? Or do they do exchange type things? Let me know. Thanks

even if you exchange there is a high chance of getting another defective piece with the headphone problem .. i would suggest returning it and wait for the inspiron 1525

You didn't do your research and are paying for it. Exchanging the notebook for another piece will do no good. You can get a refund if you return within 21 days. After that you have to try eBay or Craigslist. Best of luck!

I agree with posters above. Return the product while you still have time and research the next unit that Dell offers.

Sorry, I realize that it will most definitely have a problem with another 1520, but I was referring to if exchanging for another type of notebook. But I guess they would just give me credit from this one and then have me order something else. Thanks for your guys' input. I'm gonna try returning it for credit, and hopefully get the improved 1525.

Called customer support tonight and received a good representative. She told me that they would build a brand new computer with a new motherboard and ship it to me, and then once I receive it I can send this one back. If the new one has the same problem (which I guarentee it will).. I have 30 days to get a refund.
Maybe by then the 1525 will be out..

Dude, just like you said, your next one will have the noise. Mine had it after a mobo replacement.
I finally convinced the CS rep to send a free X-Fi card so I could listen to lectures without wanting to rip my eardrums out (a little dramatic...).
