So I've had this dell Inspiron 1525 laptop for a couple years. The fan on it had gotten so loud and grating on the ears that I couldn't take it anymore. I took apart the laptop, and tried to clean the fan, no luck. Out of frustration I (and really stupid i know) cut the red/yellow/black power cord to the fan.

Well, no more noisy fan, but now when I try to start the computer it just constantly loads at the windows 7 start screen (before login). What did I do to the laptop? Is it the cord I cut or did i forget to attach something when I put it back together?

    Please help!

The fan is responsible for keeping your computer cool.

If the fan is not running, odds are everything is now overheating causing potential damage to your system (melting components for example).

    STOP running the laptop!

Connect the fan wires back to get your fan going again.

If your computer really bothers you that much, in the future I'd say to stay away from cracking it open and just snip the power cord. No muss, no fuss.

I'm praying you didn't literally cut the wires with scissors. If you're lucky, you can solder the power leads (red and black) back together and tape em up, or find someone to do it for you. Splicing probably won't suffice. The yellow lead is going to be the problem though. That's the RPM lead, it takes in info that causes to BIOS to either spinup or spindown the fan. I'd leave it alone, tbh, and let it just run full bore all the time, because getting a good connection on that it a bit of a pain.

Or, just go buy another fan. The bearings are probably running dry or the grooves are worn out. Fans are easy to replace for the most part, just 4 screws. Make sure the flow arrow is pointing in the same direction and you're fine.

The wires probably just connect right to the motherboard, so I would just purchase a new fan and replace the whole deal. You will spend more time trying to fix the wires and still end up with a noisy fan.

I have not taken apart one of my 1525s so I can not tell how it is setup but on my latitudes even without the fan it still has the ability to cool some so just booting it up for a minute or two would not kill it. Some machines might not boot without a fan plugged in though.

wow thanks, thats pretty affordable. But this brings me to my other problem. I can't seem to get the metal from (that covers the motherboard) off. I've undone ever screw but it still has a plastic bit in the very center that it's still connected to. Any ideas? Maybe there's a video on how to take this thing apart?

Dell has service manuals on how to take their laptops apart. I do not have a minute to search for it right now but they are on Dell's site.

The reason your fan got so annoying is because:

    a) The thermal paste is not doing it's job

    b) The heatsink fins are clogged with dust so the fan kicks into HIGH because the airflow is blocked. I created a thread on this, it solved the same problem on my Vostro 1500. ;)

in the mean-time i wanted to ask whats the best way to fix the problem at hand before i get a new fan? Just splice together the wires? (theres a red, black and yellow)

also.. im still confused how cutting the fan's cables keeps my laptop from booting up? because its not like it crashes from overheating, it just continuously tries to load windows

Your laptop, as most, run through a quick diagnostics check prior to booting up. One of the tests is the fan. This is why upon booting the laptop the fan will accelerate to full rpm and then cut back. It's checking to ensure that it's functioning properly. But shutting down when the test fails, the computer is preventing further damage be not allowing the computer to operate without a functioning cooling system, thus preventing overheating and damage to the motherboard and CPU.

Anyway to bypass this? Or is it too dangerous to go without having the fan run? The laptop never really seems to get that hot compared to others i've owned. And the Fan was pretty jammed up already when it was working..

Far too dangerous. I'm sure you wouldn't want to replace your system. The reason it got not that hot was because the fan was working, now it's not there, it will not do it's job, i.e cool the system down.

not running your computer with a fan spells disaster and suicide.
