Sometimes, on my new inspiron 1525, the cd drive pops out. Completely randomly, usually doesn't happen when there's a cd/DVD/game in it, but has been known to. A few times, I have pressed the mute button and that has seemed to cause it to pop out. But not always. Like I said, completely random. I have called Dell and tried to explain this situation to them, but they don't understand the concept of random. In fact, as I am posting this thread, my cd drive just came out. I pressed on nothing except the keyboard. This makes no sense to me and it's entirely frustrating. Is anyone else having this problem or a solution to it?

I'm thinking maybe a macro got set to eject the drive? Re-type the paragraph you just typed in its entirety in notepad and see if it happens again. Otherwise, no idea.

I tried that, but it didn't work. Thanks for your help anyway as you're the only person who seemed to even have any sort of idea at this time.

I have seen some forms of spyware/malware that can cause this. One of them, although manually done from a remote computer, was called NetBus "back in the day" (late 90's) where someone could remotely eject your CD-Rom drive amongst other very bad things. There was a joke being sent around also that varied depending on where you were, but the one i'm thinking of is the Coke prank where it'd have this greetings message, tell you you've won a prize... a free cup holder... and then it'd eject your CD-Rom drive. So it is possible to eject the CD drive via software, but usually not without actually having installed or running something at the time. If you have reloaded your OS since you've been having the problem and its still occuring, I'd lean towards a faulty drive. The 1525 isn't a slot-load drive, is it? If you have to push a button on the drive itself to eject it, then its most likely faulty. If its like my XPS M1530 you have a button on the notebook itself (away from the cd-drive) that is touch sensitive and it could be accidentally triggering. (unlikely)

Be stern with Dell support. If you've reloaded the OS and the drive still keeps randomly ejecting, tell them you want a new drive and you'll take nothing less. Unless they can come up with a reason they have to replace it.

Hi, I just wondered if you solved this problem or got Dell to replace your drive? I'm having the same problem, I'm sure its nothing I press accidentally as its jumped out while I haven't been touching the laptop. I thought it might be my OS (I'm running Linux), but I assume you're running Windows as you haven't mentioned specifically what you're using. Thanks.

I had the same problem before. I wouldn't say it was software because it happened when it was new with no additional softwares installed yet. What I did was push it back thinking maybe it's a bit loose since it was fairly easy to remove. You just need to unscrew something at the back to remove it. I'm not sure if that did the trick, but I haven't had the "drive popping out randomly" experience for 3 months now. If it did then I suspect that it was just not seated properly.

I was having the same problem. Apparently the drive is defective so Dell sent a "refurbished" drive to replace it. They did not send directions to remove the drive. That is what led me here.

Hi guys. I am suffering from the same problem. I rang Dell and they sent me a new DVD drive but it's still doing the same thing! Has anyone managed to solve the issue?

    Many thanks :)

Same problem. I'm going to guess there is a macro set up for it since it only happens while I'm typing. (It also happens while I'm switching songs. Can't think of anything for that though) Can't find it online though. Any ideas on where to search for Key Macros or drive functions software on our laptops?
    Peace ;) ,

    Followup of my previous post.
The only auto eject I can find is for completion after a 'Master burn" found by checking the properties of the drive in Computer explorer. Maybe there is a malfunction there? (I don't know how to access to look at the software code for the drive otherwise I would! Know how to do that anyone?) I turned it off just in case.

You know I haven't had any problems since then so that might have done the trick what I did.

    Hi there,

Thanks for this forum, after speaking to Dell I thought I was the only person on the planet with this problem and thought I was going mad.

I bought mine at an electrical shop and tried to take it back, the problem has been happening since brand new so definately not spyware etc, but the would not take it back as the fault could not be proven.

I have tried turning the auto eject off as Angelmarauder said so fingers crossed that will work...

    Thanks again..

    C

The latest firmware may help? Excess heat can do this also.

If anyone is still having this issue. Go to the Dell support home page and enter your service tag and join an online chat with a technical services person.

He sent me loads of links and showed me how to sort it out, Dell are very much aware of this issue (aparently it is something called flee power)

    Good luck all...
