Fan not starting / kicking in / operating at all?
Hi, the 1st thing I noticed was my laptop overheating and turning off, I initially cleaned out the fan and the heat sink vent.
I then (based of price of parts) decided to buy and fit a new fan and heat sink module, this also did not work.
I then decided to replace the motherboard as I could not think of anythng else and you have guessed it, still no fan kicking in at all.
The laptop works fine until it is under stress and the heat builds up. I am reluctant to use it to much as I do not want it to overheat again and maybe damage other things but I have pushed it as much as I dare and the fan never kicks it.
I am now fully stumped an cannot think of any other cause or repair? I cannot see how it could be a software issue and I very much doubt The replacement motherboard has the exact same fault?
Has anybody heard of anything like this?
If you require any futher info please state.
Many thanks, S

Hi Scooty,
Have you tried running diagnostics at start-up (F12 kicks it off).
I have a similar problem - fan not kicking in and 1525 overheating.
The diagnostics showed a thermistor failure and i'm currently trying to find out how to resolve it. Can't find any info about where the faulty thermistor is, on the motherboard or somewhere else? but seems to indicate the basic cause of the prob here at least. -
Thanks Mick,
I have tried running the boot up diagnostics and everything completes fine.
Since you have a similar fault as me I will also investigate this thermistor you speak of incase it leads to anything.
Any other ideas? -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
So you've replaced both the fan and the motherboard?
Can you spin the fan up and down using something like i8kfangui?
Can you report CPU temps correctly with something like HWMonitor, etc? -
Yes, I have replaced the fan, heat sink, thermal paste and eventually the motherboard. The fan will still not kick in to cool the temp at any point.
I am actually on the laptop at the moment (just about to turn it off before it totally pops) and I can report the temps with SpeedFan 4.46 are:
Core 0: 92 'C
Core 1: 92 'C
HD0: 38 'C
Temp1: 30 'C (Maybe motherboard?)
After bootup and idling the core temps are normally 40- 45ish
I have not been able to find a utility to manually force the fan on yet as all I have tried are not compatable with my Inspiron 1525
I have tried these 3:
CoreTemp
SpeedFan
I8KFanGui
Any ideas? -
Just thinking out loud.
After swapping out all possible hardware components which could cause this I am having second thoughts on software problems.
I have tested in safe mode and created a new profile and same fault. (trying to avoid full format at this stage and no 2nd HD to test with"
BUT: Does anyone know of any service or registry entry /value which may be used to control fan actions and be corrupt?
