Hi, my brand new Dell has the fan coming on for short bursts every couple of minutes. This is so annoying. It has a Intel 2390. The fan is coming on when the processor reaches around @ 50 degrees. I have tried RM clock and got the voltage down from 1.25 to 0.9. This still does not reduce the temps./ thus fan noise.

I have used RM on my HP that has an Intel T9300 and the temps are like 30 degrees. I pretty much only here the fan at start up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought the same computer yesterday and I noticed this as well. It comes on very frequently when plugged into the adaptor, and less so when it's on battery power. I'm wondering two things: first, is there any way to manage power settings when it's plugged into the wall.

Anyway, I'd hate to return it for such a stupid reason when everything else is good (battery life good, weight good, speed good). I guess we'll see.

PS. When the fan turns on, the notebook isn't hot. At all. Is this just a preventative thing that Dell laptops do to keep everything cool? I'm not sure.

Yes you can manage the power. Down on the task bar there are 3 options. Dell, performance and power save. When using the Dell and power save the voltage is lowered, however the fan still likes to make those bursts as temps. reach 50.

When using Core Temp and the RM voltage utility the processor isn't identified correctly.(I think) It reads my processor in both of those utilities as Mobile Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom).

Anybody out there with some insight?

try to run I8k FanGUI to control your fans. maybe its a bios issue.

All I'm really concerned about is whether it is OK for a laptop to do this (ie. is the fan running regularly a sign of a problem, or is it simply how this particular laptop maintains its cool temperature). I can contend with a little hum in the background - it's not on par witha 747 taking off or anything - if that's the price for the laptop not overheating. I was thinking about getting/exchanging this one for a hp dv6000 series, but I hear those have poor battery life and overheat. I'd rather my computer be slightly more noisy and not have to shut down/short out from heat than the other way around.

    Hi

I bought mine yesterday and it seems that it is not quiet annoying yet. I am happy with my unit.

I tried to run I8k FanGUI, fan still coming on.. I looked over in the Dell forums and this is defiantly a problem. Over there they are crying for a Bios update. I guess it is a waiting game now.....

I installed NHC and have been monitering temperatures to see what's going on. When completely idle the CPU is 39-42 degrees C. As I start surfing the internet, etc the temperature climbs slowly until it's around 50-54 which is when the fan kicks in, after which the temperature drops back down to the early 40s. So, I guess the fan is just doing its job.
