    Hi,

My dad needs a laptop primarily for writing and editing. I am thinking of getting him a refurbished Dell Inspiron 1525.

Can anyone who owns this laptop give me the pros and cons especially if you write a lot? And can you recommend any other laptop model in the Dell line?

Should I worry about reliability with a "refurbished" Dell laptop? He is in Asia now and I would like to know if Dell US warranty apply to repairs made in that part of the world?

    Hi there,

I very much like the Inspiron 1525 for its all-round performance and general reliability, but one concern I would have if I were are a heavy writer on the notebook is of the keyboard finish.

Dell uses a glossy silver key finish for the Inspiron/Vostro/XPS keyboards and I've read reports lately that with heavy, constant typing this silver finish has started to wear off (on the keys and palmrests).

While this is primarily an aesthetic complaint I imagine that there would be a small reduction in typing comfort on worn keys that have lost their finish.

If you're after something very hard wearing, the Vostro 1510 would most likely be the best from Dell. It's extremely similar to the Inspiron 1525, but marketed toward small business - i.e., it has a hard wearing black case, keyboard, surfaces etc.

    Keep us informed!
