Which is better to get, the inspiron 1525 or the 1420? I've looked at both and i don't know which one to get. the only thing i didn't like about the 1420 was the black thing sticking out of the back...is that the battery? is there any way to get it without that sticking out?

You could try getting a smaller capacity battery so it doesn't stick out so much, but the problem being is, if you want to be mobile with long battery life, that will suffer.
Plus, depending on the model, having an oversized battery is actually a good thing, because it helps to prop it up when you set it on a desk. ;) Which in theory, can help promote better cooling. ;)
Also, the base 1525 model is $150 cheaper.

it sticks out the back so it wouldn't prop up the laptop...and i don't really care about the price.

if thats the only thing you didn`t like about the 1420, just get a 6 cell battery and it wont stick out.

Yeah, that's what I did - the laptop came with a 9 cell battery which is great for battery life (nearly 4 hrs). But... it was a bit awkward and heavy so I got a third party 6 cell battery for $99. Now I get 2 1/2 + battery life but it "feels" better (and of course if I do want more time I can just use the 9 cell battery.)

I went for the 1420 b/c it was smaller and lighter than the 1525. I would have considered the XPS 1330 if they had a higher res screen for it.

Both are junk "ToysRus" laptops. Get the Vostro 1510 if you want a nice unit or wait for the new E Latitude models which will come out in a few weeks.
