A buddy of mine spilled water on his inspiron and it has problems. This is what he is dealing with. How bad is it?

Dell Inspiron 15.4 inch i1525-119B laptop computer. It worked fine since it was new (not used much), but suffered spill damage (small amount of water spilled on the keyboard) and now will not power on. The keys do not stick, and function fine. The DVD drive pops open when I push it, like normal. A few indicator lights will come on when I hit the power button, and the fan turns on, but that's as far as it goes. It has another 3 months left on the warranty but spill damage is not covered and I assume they will know what happened if i send it in for repair. Options.???

The fact that it powers on and a few indicator lights come on... that means that one or more hardware components have a problem operating. Try to see if you can open up your computer using the service manual for your Inspiron and try to see if you can tell where the damage is.

Usually for a water spill, what happens is some rust will appear on the circuitry or connectors that disrupts the flow of electrons. All you have to do is to try to wipe the rust clean and it will work fine.

Try to clean it out yourself first as I doubt there is any permanent damage due to water unless the rust is where you cannot clean out even after opening up your system. If after cleaning it, it does not work still, then your only choice is to call up dell to fix, or buy a new one.

Before you even powered it on your should have disassembled it and let it dry completely. It also takes a small amount to short the circuits.
