I left my laptop overnight downloading some stuff and when i checked it in the morning, the little blue led to the far left was on but the screen was shut down and the laptop did not respond. I tried everything until i had to hold the power button and turn it on all over again.
Why is it shutting down on its own?

Have you tried disabling Hybrid Sleep and Sleep mode?
After installing windows on my laptop, it was set to sleep after a set amount of time on inactivity / not being used.
Also, are you running on the Pre loaded operating system, or did you do a fresh reinstall of windows? Are all of your drivers updated to the latest versions? -
Sounds to me like it had locked up if you had to hold the power button to turn it off and turn it back on again. Did you try just pushing the power button quickly to wake it up? I assume so, but have to check.
I'd go into the control panel > administrative tools > event viewer and have a look through the various logs to see if anything was fired off at some point last night.
