Which would you all recommend ? Its my first laptop and I don't want it to become useless in like a year or two.

I know the XPS is more powerful, I just want to know which one has had more problems / issues. I'm willing to pay extra for a truly better machine.

I don't need a laptop for gaming, just web, word processing apps, pictures, video .. the standard stuff.

    Thanks :)

If you don't game go for the 1525. It is very sturdy, it definitely won't be useless in a year.

The only thing the 1530 offers that the 1525 doesn't is a T9300 and t9500 processor and the 8600GT graphics card. Both of those options are overkil if you don't game.

my opinion of the 1525 is that its the exact same as the xps 1530, but with some differences. heres what i see different. the xps has

    1. different casing (no duh)
    2. a slot load disc drive
    3. barrel hinge
    4. optional fingerprint reader
    5. better support
    6. more options to choose from like dedicated graphics
    7. magnesium palm rest (or is it aluminum?)

otherwise its fundamentally the same thing. you get the same selection of ports, same crappy touchpad, same keyboard and set of buttons... i wouldn't be surprised if both shared the same mobo

for your needs, either laptop is the same to you... just one is more expensive than the other. i would say get the m1530 for the cosmetics, otherwise if you dont want to pay that extra $100-200 go for the 1525

    The palm rest is aluminum.

But as previous post said, if you don't game it's not worth spending the extra for XPS.

Yeah, the Inspiron sounds like it would be better suited for you.

Have you looked at the new 15" Vostro? If you dont mind the 100% black case, it might be the perfect compromise. It does not have a HDMI port like the 1525, but other then that its better in every way. Also has the option for a 8400gs, so it you wanted to game, you would have the option.(if you dont, sticking with the X3100 would add ~20minutes to the battery life)

Honestly, i see no compelling reason to look at the 1525 right now, other then the HDMI port.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Really appreciate it !!!

@ the above poster, no I haven't looked at the 15" Vostro but will have a look see. Thanks for the suggestion.

At the risk of sounding really dumb - LOL ... what is the HDMI port and what is it used for ?

it's used for connecting your computer to a tv

i was actually debating between the 1525 and 1530 too...i was wondering why no one ever suggests the 1525? is there something really wrong with it? there have been a few posts that said that it's not very well made, but i have only seen a few threads complaining about the 1525 compared to the many threads with people complaining about xps problems.

HDMI is a port that allows you to connect your laptop to your Television or any other display device. The single cord can transfer both video and sound so it's really cool and convienent.

Theres nothing wrong with the 1525. This is an enthuistists website so most people here would prefer the gaming and looks of the 1530.

There are more threads about xps problems because more people here own XPS computers. Doesn't mean the build quality is better than the other.

The 1525 is a VERY nice computer. I own a 1530 and bought a friend a 1525 which was shipped to my house so I could reformat and put applications on it. They are exactly the same size, the 1525 looks very very nice and it felt very sturdy to me.

Looks are overrated, if you don't game there is no reason for you to NOT get a 1525. You save a LOT of money and get the same performance. I actually prefered the look of my friends 1525 to my 1530 (mainly because after you are around something for awhile you get tired of it).

To me, the much better warranty service on the XPS is worth it. Well, unless we are talking $1000.00 difference in price (which with XPS systems compared to vostro/inspiron could easily happen).

Thanks for commenting. Very helpful and more to think about :D

I've looked at the Vostro and not particularly crazy about the whole black look but the specs are good, better than Inspiron and comparable to the XPS. There's a significant price difference between those two and the Inspiron. I'm still on the fence about which to get.

Video editing shouldn't be a problem with the GMA x3100. HD playback shouldn't be a problem either if you have a powerful enough CPU
