    Hi all

Just received my new Inspiron 1545.

I went for the max spec I could at the time of ordering, except for the RAM - since its cheaper to buy seperate and upgrade!

The system came with 4GB as standard.

I believe the system can handle up to 8GB RAM??

If so, where can I buy a 4GB single module from? Ive tried Dell parts and they say they dont supply them!!

Before anyone asks - I'll be installing Win7 64bit, so I'll be able to use it all!

    Newegg.com, Frys.com, TigerDirect.com. Ton of other sites.

Upgrading to 8 GB right now is a waste of money for 99% of the population.

Sorry, should have mentioned Im in the UK, so need UK based sites.

Waste of money for most people - but not a waste when work is paying for it ;o)

It can only accept up to 4GB of ram and the 1545 comes with 2GB base. If you have 4GB already, that is as high as you can go. To accept up to 8GB you need a Studio 1555, which is a much nicer laptop imho.

On the contrary... unless Dell's lying, their own 1545 manual says that the machine can take 8GB of memory:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1545/en/SG/F123HA01MR.pdf

    See the "specifications" section.

If you go through the 1545 customisation on the Dell website, when building a machine, you can opt for 8GB RAM - so yes, it can handle 8GB.

Grr. Dell gets on my nerves. That's the only place they mention anything about 8GB.

Your dell website is different than my dell website.

They don't regularly mention 8GB support because up until recently it was very uncommon to even consider a system with more than 4GB of RAM.

Absolutely the machine can use 8GB of RAM - I tried it on mine a while back with two 4GB sticks and it worked perfectly.

However, they are ridiculously expensive to buy.

Places in the UK you can get them from, well any decent online retailer to be honest; here are a few:

    ccl
    Dabs.com
    MrMemory
    eBuyer
    Misco

Prices have recently dropped a little, but still expect to pay more than £100 for each module, and you will need to buy two modules because the 4GB in your laptop will be 2 x 2GB; and you only have 2 memory slots, so both need to be replaced.

Also, this might be obvious, but make sure you are using a 64bit operating system, otherwise the whole effort is pointless.

Haha, I remember this guy from another forum I moderate, he posted a thread about in-game lag issues, and he had 9GB of DDR3 memory (weird number to begin with), and XP 32-bit. >_<

The guy said he refused to go to 64-bit Vista because it's "horribly unstable and insecure".

People like that should not be allowed on the internet, and should surrender all their wasted memory to me. :p

Contacted my account manager at Dell, who put me through to accessories.
They later emailed me saying the max the system could handle was 4GB, and they did not know where I was getting my information from.

I emailed back with a link to their configuration page on the Dell site.
I also emailed the above link to the system user guide.
Both state the system can handle 8GB RAM.
I then asked where he gets HIS information from!!

I havent heard back from them since??!!!

Finally ordered my 8GB RAM, along with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Ended up ordering elsewhere since Dell didnt know what they were talking about!
