    Hi.
    I have a Dell Inspiron 1545.

I spilt a small bit of drink on the touchpad recently and it stopped responding. The keyboard still works fine, it was just on the touchpad itself.

I got a new palmrest and touchpad online and did a DIY replacement but to no avail - the hardware is not showing up in Control Panel and obviously trying to install the driver for it does nothing.

I took the laptop apart again and made sure the connection from the touchpad to the motherboard was secure, but still no luck.

Anyone have an idea? I can use a USB mouse but I find it annoying, prefer the touchpad.

    Thanks...

What kind of replacement DIY palmrest did you end up replacing? If you have a link it'd be a great help and could you also post the specs of your laptop.

The problem is that the product you purchased was used, so there's a good chance it was broken from the start. I would recommend getting an unused/manufacturer refurbished version of that. That way all possibility of it being broken can be denied, also think about upgrading to Windows 7 (64-Bit).

As a side-note, see if you can get a Intel Core 2 Duo T6400/T6500/T6600/T6670/T8100/T8300/T9300/T9500, these processors will also make your laptop run cooler and more efficiently, as I've heard that's the biggest issue w/1545's.
