My mother just bought the 1545. I've noticed that the screen doesn't seem to be evenly lit. For example when I set the desktop background to black, it looks pretty black at the top of the screen, but as I look further down towards the bottom it turns almost medium gray/blue-ish.

I've tried all brightness, contrast and gamma settings with no luck.

Has anyone else seen this problem, and is it a reason for sending back the laptop? Or is this something "you get" for buying a lower-end laptop like the 1545?

I bought a inspiron 1420 that came with a crappy display and asked to get it replaced. The second one turned out worst than the first so I just returned the laptop for good. Hope you have better luck.

Well, honestly, some lower end laptops have lower end displays. However, I'm assuming it's for your mom, does she care, does she notice, and is it annoying to her? If not, then I ask the question, why bother? Does she notice it during normal use? I mean, how often during normal use will you be viewing an entirely black screen for more than a couple seconds? Just a couple questions. I'm sure this is just backlight bleed, from lower quality displays.

You're right. She doesn't notice (I think). A least I havent mentioned it to her.
I just wanted to check with other 1545 owners to see it they have experienced the same problem in any way.

But it seems to be a common problem with this screen, so I think I'll just leave it. My mother is thrilled to have a new laptop, and I'd hate to take that away from her by sending it to repair this early.

Thanks for your input and thoughts, though!
