I have a Inspiron 1564 running i5-430M which is a bit slow for me right now, so I am looking to upgrade the CPU.

I am pretty sure it supports the Arrandale (i5 4xx-5xx) processors.

However, I am wondering does the Inspiron 1564 supports the new Sandy Bridge processors? Mainly looking at i5-2520M or i5-2540M.

    Thanks

Arrandale and Sandy Bridge are not compatible.

You can upgrade to i7-6xxM, i7-7xxQM or 8xxQM

Given how many Inspiron 1564 I had to repair for overheating, I don't recommend anything over an Arrandale Core i5. Also release that by upgrading the CPU you will need to remove and flip over the system board. If you wish to still upgrade, while you are there you'll want to repaste everything and blow out all the dust in the fan/heatfins/heatsink.

    Thanks for all the info.

So my best bet for performance wise would be i5-560M or i5-580M, since the the heat issue rules out the i7?

I mean what is wrong with your 430M? You might be better off cleaning up your start up stuff unless you are rendering. You can upgrade, but honestly 5xx processors just offer higher turbo ratios. Normal usage you will not be able to tell the difference.
