I could not see a thread for us with the budget range Inspirons so thought I should make a thread, and if a mod can make it official.![]()
Anyone got the 1564 here?
Mine is due to be delivered by 4th March hopefully and current status is in production.

Good Idea.
I just got one and for me and it been pretty solid except for the keyboard flex being much worse on the left side over the dvd drive. I wanted to try to fix it but I could get power button panel off.
Also If your panel keeps going to 100% brightness on battery then you need to update to the new intel graphics drivers on the dell website.
On an odd note, I can't figure out if why there seems to be two different kinds of sleep: one if I press Fn+Esc or if I press the power button and one mode when I close the lid. I can not set my laptop to auto login if I press Fn+esc and I can not get out of sleep with an other button but the power button. Both of these thing work if I close the lid. -
Ah thanks for the heads up.
Are you in the UK? -
Update:
Got automated Call from Dell today saying Delivery been confirmed for Tuesday 23rd February!! Between 12 and 5.
Online status still says in Production however. -
Assuming you have recieved now, how are you finding the 1564? I am thinking of buying the same model you have, seems good value for money and its a nice size/ design. Will be replacing a Late 08 MacBook...
-
I'm very interested in your advice about that model! How is the quality of the material? Is the notebook silent or does the fan make much noise? How about the temperature? When you touch the surface, is it warm or well cooled down?
Many questions, thanks for your answer.
-
I went to look at one in PCWorld, the quality of the material is amazing, its really top notch. Feels very solid and upmarket, certainly better than the Studio 15, which is odd given this is supposed to be a cheaper model. Nice Piano Black lid, and the interior is sort of brushed alluminium.
-
Yeah it does feel sturdy and looks much better then my old Acer which cost £900. Only build issue is the underneath, one side creeks a bit when you hold it from underneath. Not sure if thats worth going to Dell about.
My only concern is that it is quite slow for a new laptop to boot up even after a clean install. -
Would you show me how to clean install this 1564? I just bought this laptop yesterday. I agree that this is a little bit slow when it boot up (my processor is i3).
I had a Sony NW with processor T6600 2.2ghz. I used NW for trial around 3 months. I noticed that this Sony is faster than 1564 when NW boot up. I really dont know why T6600 is faster than i3 processor????
-
Why did you get rid of the Sony NW? Surely 1564 is a bit of a downgrade?
-
You just need to use the Windows 7 Disc Dell gave you or own own disc and boot from it and then format the C drive and install Windows 7. I am not sure why it boots so slow.
Its not a downgrade at all, the Sony Vaio NW20SF/S has T6600 cpu @ 2.2GHZ which clock by clock is only 7mhz faster then i3 330m. Plus the Vaio has DDR2 vs DDR3 of the Dell. The Vaio also has the older Intel 4500MHD gfx chip. -
Depends how you look at it. I got a NW for a family member a couple of months ago and are currently considering a 1564 for myself. The way I see it, the Dell may have the better the CPU, but the Sony is a much better built premium machine with higher quality materials, and it also has better connectivty with 802.11N and Gigabit Ethernet. These factors are putting me of the Dell.
-
Do you think that the 1564 is lighter than NW. I just take a look of E series Sony. I think E series is heavier than 1564. I think the sound of E series is not good than 1564. Any idea????
-
Well yes the Sony might have been built better but Sony are not as reliable, might be as reliable as Dell but I dont think £150 extra for better built laptop is worth it when it has a older CPU and gfx chip. For about £30 you can get a wireless N adapter which will be better then built in Sony one.
-
What are you thinking about the new Dell Vostro 3000 series? The Vostro 3500 is comparable to the Inspiron 1564, but it seems to be much higher quality. Partly aluminium, robust, without all that fuzz you don't need...
Assuming there is nobody who actually has one of those new models, can anybody tell me something about Vostro notebooks in general? -
I'm very much a fan of the looks of the Vostro 3500, as you say its looks to be built very well indeed and its lighter than the already lightweight Inspiron 1564. Problem I'm finding is in the UK getting a 3500 the same spec as the 1564 is costing about £80 more, and I just cannot see what you get for that extra money. I tried telling this to Dell over the phone but they claim the two "are not comparable"
....
Right now I'm looking at the Inspiron 1564, VAIO EB, Samsung R580, HP G62 and the Vostro 3500 to replace my MacBook. They are all good but I'm not yet sold on any of them. If the Inspiron had the connectivty you would expect from a modern laptop like Gigabit, 802.11N and Bluetooth I would go and buy one no questions asked, but it dosent. -

I dont know the E sony has a good sound or not. Inspiron has SRS premum sound. Which one should I buy?
-
Sony every day of the week no questions asked. Its cheaper, more premium, better built and of better specification. The Inspiron whilst a good laptop isn't as good as the VAIO EB. I wouldn't let the speakers influence your decision as they are such a small part of a laptop.
-
Oh you know what, the EB is heavier than 1564. In addition, I dont know the battery of EB. Will the battery drain so fast? I have looked some post about Sony laptop, most of people said Sony battery will drain so fast. That's why I am thinking about inspiron 1564.
-
Personally, I'd be more intersted in saving $80, getting better graphics and buying into a premium brand high quality laptop, rather than picking up a more expensive Dell that weighs a bit less and may have better speakers.
Unfortunately for me, in the UK the Sony costs substantially more than the Dell. -
Yes in the UK the Sonys are expensive.
So its a no brainer when compred to the NW Series. -
We were actually comparing the 1564 with the E-Series i3 VAIO in the previous few posts.
-
I am using 1564. I agree that this battery is last long. I really dont know this battery is 6 cell or 9 cell. This battery creates an angle for my laptop. I bought 1564 at Costco.
-
If it sticks out of the laptop at the back then its a 9 cell.
-
The Vostro 3500 has a fast hard drive (7200 rpm) with a free fall sensor, and besides it has the connectivity you are looking for: Gigabit, 802.11n, Bluetooth. And a better integrated camera (2 MP vs 1,3 MP in the Inspiron 1564).
If I don't find something much better, I'm going to buy that one.
-
Okay, no, I didn't look close enough...Only the more expensive models of Vostro 3500 have 802.11n and Bluetooth...and in the general tech specs for it, they say 2 MP camera, but when I configure an individual notebook, there is always only the 1,3 MP camera...strange...
-
Yes thats true, but the 802.11n and Bluetooth is neither standard nor an option on the base model Vostro 3500. Might have to see if the customer reps phone can do anything for me.
