    Hi all,

A customer recently brought in their Inspiron 1564 because it wouldn't power on. We determined that it was either the DC Jack or the motherboard, so we swapped both with brand new parts. Now, the computer powers on, but the battery does not charge, and the laptop claims that the AC adapter cannot be determined. It does this for both our Dell OEM charger, our universals, as well as the customer's third party charger.

We swapped it with a brand new Dell OEM battery, didn't change anything.

I give up, and Google isn't finding anyone else with this model having this issue. Any ideas, guys?

    Hi there,

Since my sisters dog chewed up my old adapter I have some experience with this.
A generic adapter will only power the laptop on but will not charge the battery.
Probably every Dell OEM adapter will power the laptop but will not charge the battery.

What you need is the exact same model of charger that came with it. Or something close like the Studio charger I'm using now.
Some chargers like those from the Precision series plug look 100% identical but the 1564 will refuse to accept those for some reason. (tested it)

It should give you a warning at POST when it recognizes you're using a charger you're not supposed to use, however this warning can be turned off but the laptop still won't charge the battery from it.

Well, I guess it's worth a shot, but somehow I get the feeling that getting a new charger won't do anything for me. Maybe I'm just pessimistic. Would certainly like to get some other opinions as well.

    Hi cApNhOwDy,

Was the mother board and dc module replaced with similar/identical parts from Dell or was it purchased online/3rd party retailer?

Connect the original adapter that was shipped along with the system and update the BIOS using this link:

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

If that does not fix, the issue could most likely be the system board. Try to contact Dell Out of Warranty Repair on 1-800-288-4410 if you wish to purchase compatible parts.

    Glad to help.

    Thanks & Regards
