    Hi,

I have an Inspiron 15R (N5010) and the only solution I have found to get rid of the CPU whine is a simple script entering an infinite loop (eg. while (true) {} ).

This locks my Core i3 350M to its maximum frequency of 2.26 Ghz. The whine noise almost completely disappears.

The promising "Disable SpeedStep" option in the BIOS doesn't seem to have any effect: my frequency still is dynamically adjusted by Windows, even though I've set minimum=maximum state=100% in processor power management, in my power options.

Do you guys have any other suggestion on how to get rid of the noise? It is really annoying.

    Thanks
    -MF

NB: have searched the web for answers but I found so many messages back in 2007 and 2008 that I thought I should repost the question here. I'm using Windows 7 x64.

You are right saying I am not 100% sure the noise, itself, is coming from the CPU. The noise comes from the motherboard, somewhere.

As I said if I run an empty loop, which forces my CPU not to enter sleep state, the noise goes away.

This strongly suggests the noise is related to the CPU. But you are right the noise can come from somewhere else.

Is there a way I can get rid of the noise? I fear if I return the laptop to Dell, they might just send me back a new laptop with exactly the same problem.
