    Since the XPS is out of my price range (now) I'm looking at the Inspiron SE series, the 15 has the 3612QM and 7730m graphics at 6lbs and the 17 has the 3610QM and 650m graphics at 7lbs. Is the size difference to spec difference great enough to move up to the 17 in. or should the 15 be sufficient?

    I would go for the 17" due to:

    - Hi Res on a small screen is not so good for your eyes and since you can barely see things, you pay more for nothing. You might find it a bit too much even on 17";

    - bigger laptop means better overall cooling, since both are about the same (well 3612QM does use less power and so does the 7730, but not by that much);

    - graphic card is around 25% better and that is something;

    - difference in weight is nothing to worry about;

    -easy to use two HDD or SDD in raid and one mSATA;

    - full keyboard.

    This is why after a 15" now I went back to 17".

    Now I take my laptop almost everywhere (kinda). I go on vacation, bring my laptop. School, bring my laptop sometimes. On a road trip, got my laptop. So still would the 17 be too big or is it still ok for light-medium travel?

    17 inch are far 2 much for travels...
    why not stick to the 15 inch one?

    FULL HD on 15 inch is by far not bad, I experienced full hd on the new asus zenbook (13 inch) and it is just awesome.

    This was not on the table this morning :)

    Backpack wise and you will never feel it. Weight is about the same. I do advice you to use backpacks and no shoulder bags.

    But there is a problem. I do not know how big it is compared to you, but in general it will look and feel big.

    I know, I had 17", then 15" and now I am back to 17".

    I got the 15 for the same reason, I thought it would be easier to carry around. And it is, small bag, small device, easy to handle. In that respect, it's up to you. No one can decide this better that you.

    I am back to 17" again for the reasons I stated above (first reply). So I know now - since 2004 I had some time to see what is what, the things I loose and the things I win. There is no perfect combo for this.

    About FHD on 13", might look great for some stuff. If you in fact work on it every day, all the day, it is not that great. You guys need to take care of your eyes on the long run. I was young once, I know how it feels.

    3612QM less performance 10% compare by I7-3610QM.
    and why 15R not use GT650M. I see lenovo Y480 14" and Asus N56 15" also use GT650M
