Im trying to take advantage of the $ 500 off deal, but the one problem I've had is the inability to upgrade from the so-so ATI Mobility x1400 to the Nvidia 7900. The x1400 is my only option on the screen, despite the info saying I can upgrade. I've tried entering through different channels and deals, but nothing is working. Has the 7900 been removed from the options on the 1705?![]()

Yeah, Dell ran out of stock on the 7900GS supposedly. It has been missing for a few days at least, and isn't going to return (most likely) as the 1720 is going to probably be out this coming week.

I just noticed that they have done this.
I think it's a silent admission that this machine has a design flaw making it incapable of handling the heat generated by a high-end card.
I am one of thousands of people who had this machine working fine for a few months until it started bluescreening. I get a "memory parity error" and the Dell diagnostics confirm my video memory is cooked.
I bought the thing over a year ago and most of this time it's sat in the corner unused. The heat damage has spread now to the point where I can't even boot into Windows (whereas at first it would crash only while gaming for an hour or so)
Well I'm finally getting around to dealing with dell support but trust me, you don't want this machine with a high end card. I am 100% sure they finally understand there is a design flaw and supposedly they have fixed this in the XPS line or other newer models. It's a shame too, cause otherwise it was a fantastic machine at a great price. -
I have two Inspiron 9400s with 7900GS and not a single problem. Yes, they get hot (both iare slightly overclocked and dle with the right fan on low at ~60C) when you play (temperatures up to 80C with the fan on high), but when used on a heat dissipating surface, I barely notice the heat factor.
This is a great card in a great computer. I only wished the card was dual pipe. -
I dunno what's up with your system sumisu, but I've had my e1705 for over a year now with a 7900GS and it runs fine, rarely have received a blue screen error.
I use i8kfangui with the fans on high. It remains in the 48-51 range. When I play bf2 on all high settings and bf2142 it goes up to like 67.
I did have to take it apart recently to clean out the dust, but that should be done every so often anyways. The dust was terrible, actually kept my 2nd fan from moving. But all is good now. -
I'm sure that if I had done these from day one it would have been OK, but a design flaw IMO (and both fans on full are way too loud to accept for daily use) -
I agree that it is kind of loud, for like a classroom or shared office setting, but no louder than a desktop. Infact I can't even hear my laptop over the desktop sitting behind it.
