About two weeks ago, I was processing some photographs in the Digital Darkroom and I reached across my LT and grabbed a cup of water, hit the bottom of the lampshade and I spilled the water on the keyboard. I shut it down ( windows shut down normally ), pulled the power cord, removed the Battery as fast as I could. I let it dry out for 3 days, tried to fire it up, nothing. I tried again a day later and I get the normal BIOS screen then I get a " Missing NTLDR ". I rebooted+F12 to get to the diagnostics, the system checks out OK, no faults found, but the computer will not boot into windows, I still get the " Missing NTLDR ".

I next booted into the OS DVD to do a Repair. The repair utility says I have a problem with the Windows Start Up. I do the repair option, says it's fix but I still get that gosh dang " Missing NTLDR". Anyone have any ideas?

I need to really extract some of my files. Would removing the HD and installing the HD in a external HD case do the trick to get at those files? Am I hosed?..................................

Try it if you haven't. It doesn't seem like the HDD is totally hosed just yet.

if "under complete cover" = true then
    call the service line
    else
"reinstall windows" or "run DBRM from startup"
    end if

    Hi,

The error message about the ‘NTLDR’ indicates that the Operating system is corrupted. You may use an external casing for the hard drive, connect it to another system and back up the data. After saving the data, install the hard drive back in and re-install the windows.

If you have the complete cover warranty on the machine you may contact us and get the system serviced. Please send a Private Message to me with the Service tag of your computer; I can check the details and get back to you.

Please find below the link for service manual of Inspiron 1720, you may refer to the same while removing and installing the hard drive.

    Documentation

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

    Thanks and regards,

Thanks for your help, but it was a no-go. I installed the HD in the HD Case and tried to read the files on another Computer, it would not read the HD.
I reinstalled the HD in the Laptop, BIOS see's the HD so I formatted "C", that went OK but I cannot reinstall Windows. Maybe time for a new HD?........................

Given that the HDD didn't work in the enclosure or the laptop, then yes, it is more like a bad HDD than a bad rest of laptop. Again, just try the new HDD...

    Hi,

Since the hard drive is not getting detected in a different system also, it indicates that the hard drive is gone bad. You may consider replacing the hard drive as Commander Wolf suggested.

    Thanks and regards,
