    Hello everyone.
So my situation looks like this. My hard drive seems to be broke down. System doesn't detect him. When I do BIOS diagnostic, in hard disk drive section I get error with message: "Hard disk drive not detected" with error number 0141. Also for couple of months I have been hearing sometimes these strange noises coming from side where HDD is located (left hand-side). So it seems like HDD is down. The thing is my warranty has expired already. So my question is should order new HDD? When I called Dell customer service they told me that new HDD 160 GB costs 170 pounds (I'm in UK). Is there any chance I could make it work, or maybe repairing this could be cheaper? or should just order a new HDD instead of wasting time?

From the noise you described I would say it's dead. Unless you are trying to recover data don't bother with repair. Laptop HDD's for the most part are common, so you don't need to buy it from dell. You will need to use the cradle from your existing HDD, but the new one will just screw into that. Make sure that the one you buy is the same type (laptop hard drive, SATA 3.0 GB for the 1720). In the US you can get a 320 GB 7200 RPM laptop drive for less then $90. Don't know about UK prices. The following are 320 GB 7200 RPM drives that will work. Again the key is Laptop HDD, SATA 3.0 GB, speed and size is up to your budget.

    Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT
    HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 HTS723232L9A360
    Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS

If the drive is making goofy sounds (specially a click/clunk sound) it's quite dead and you need a new one.
170 pounds for a 160gb is a terrible price, you should be able to beat that easily.
I got my brother a new 160gb(250gb?) for $89 shipped from newegg.com, though that's in the US obviously.

I understand that particular requirments for my new HDD must be notebook HDD with Sata 3.0 GB/sec and what about size? I guess it has to be 2.5" ?

2.5" yeh. Pretty sure the 1720 has a 1.5GB/sec SATAI controller but it really wont make any difference.
