    Hi guys,

I’ve got Inspiron 1720 with 32-bit Vista on it. I’d like to install Win 7 64-bit as a second system, but have few questions.
*Can I do it by simply adding second hard drive (in Bay 2) and installing it there?
*Will it affect my Vista system at all, does it matter that I want to install 64-bit system alongside 32-bit one?
*Do I need special program to multiboot at the start?

    Thanks for your help

No you cannot go from Vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit, you must do a clean install or set up another partition and install Windows 7 on that one. You could install a 2nd hard drive and install 7 on that one...but why keep Vista?

    1) Yes, that should work.

    2) No, it should not affect the other OS.

    3) No, the 7 bootloader should take care of it.

    Thanks for replies guys!

Tsunade, I'll keep Vista for a while for the transition to be as smooth as possible. Since I'll put 7 on a different hard drive, I'll get to test 7 thoroughly first, transfer all the programs slowly, and be able to switch to Vista if need be.

The driver model for Vista and 7 is almost exactly the same, pretty much any program you have for Vista will work for 7. Windows 7 is basically an optimized Vista.

You can't "transfer" programs, they are bound to the registry, and programs must be reinstalled.
