Hi there, I have had my Inspiron 1720 since January of this year if I recall, and when I got it I had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. The only problem that I have now it seems, is that the screen appears to be almost looser than it was when I got it; I can easily and gently wobble the screen up and down in its fixed position. Is there anything I can do to stop this, as I know it shouldn't be like this, and because I did not get the laptop with this 'defect'.
    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Simon

I would talk to Dell. I looked at the service manual and to remove your screen, it is a fairly involved process. Most likely they will be able to replace your hinges for you in a quick service trip.

Get a screwdriver and make sure the holding the hinges are tight. It's the only two screws on the back and the screws directly underneath them on the bottom. Hate you to send it in to have four screws tightened ;)

No, of course not, lol. He's just joking, unless your CPU died (which never happens) Dell might, but in your case they might replace the hinges.

Well you can upgrade it yourself, Dell will do it, but they'll charge like 250% more for it. It isn't too terribly difficult.

I have the exact same problem with my vostro 1500 and I got it around the same time as you did. Moreover, the right side of the notebook is generally looser than the left, and it is especially visible when you close your notebooks lid and try pushing the right side and it wobbles. When you lean your head againt the screen of the notebook and look to the right, it doesn't look like the glass is tightly fitted to the frame and you can see light from the screen, peeking out.

I'm a bit worried about this, but haven't complained about it yet, since I do not know if it is something Dell will replace.

I've had the laptop since about christmas last year so i'm out of warranty, in the last week this hinge problem has developed where there's no resistance in it and also the opening catch isn't working so i've resorted to opening with a credit card..... anyone any advice please, i'm a student so i really can't afford a callout technician fee, if there's anyone generous enough to offer some idiot proof advice i would appreciate it greatly!

How did your warranty expire if you got it at Christmas last year? It's only been 4 months, you should still have 8 months of warranty left!

i have the same cpu in my 1520 as you have...and its not really that bad,,though we all would like a t8300,,,or something similar... i had a t8300,,but sold it because my notebook would not boot from battery,,,,got another 1520 from dell, and same problem, ended up being a bios setting problem....
