I have an older Inspiron 1720 laptop with T5450, which is showing it's age. Based on the Intel Santa Rosa platform. I have maxed out RAM to 4Gb already. I have a chance to cheaply acquire Intel T6400 ($50) or T6500($60) CPU.

I know that 1720 supports 800FSB CPUs according to docs (officially T9500 is the fastest). What I was wondering if it will support this newer T6400/T6500 cpu.

Here're the specs of one of these new CPUs:

If I commit to buying the newer CPU, there is no refund.
Has anyone tried doing this with their 1720/1721 or vostro 1720?

As long as it's a 800MHz FSB Socket P, then I think it will work. Be sure you update your BIOS to A09 to ensure that your BIOS supports the CPU.

BIOS is the part i'm concerned with. DELL is known for artificially limiting upgrade paths, where no actual physical/technological limit exist.

I was hoping that someone had tried doing that before I commit.

The only is to try it out yourself. Though it involves money and it's the hard way but since no one else has done it, it's hard to predict whether it can or cannot support in a GM965.

But having said that, though the a 2.6GHz T9500 and 4GB RAM is said to max out in the 1720, but the 2.8GHz X9000 works and so as a 4+2GB 6GB RAM setup which I have in my sig.

So yes, not to my knowledge I know of anyone's latest 800MHz FSB CPU working in an old chipset, the only way is to try it.

PS, how much are you willing to spend on a processor? I can sell you my T8100 2.1GHz 800MHz FSB CPU if you need it, which is guaranteed to work in the 1720.
