I'm looking to upgrade my 1720 to windows 7 64 bit. Drivers are not listed on the dell site. Only Vista 32bit and Windows XP. I'm looking to go windows 7 since it offers TRIM support for SSDs. I have a spare SSD and was going to put it in the 1720 prior to giving it to my brother. Can anyone offer advice or point me in the right direction?

All drivers are available, go to station drivers, Intel, nVidia etc.

You should be fine.
Windows 7 has pretty good driver support, so anything on the laptop should be picked up and installed. If not, it will go out and find it from Windows Update. Granted they are not the best drivers, but you can always upgrade them from there. -
Sounds good. Thanks guys. +1

SomeFormOFhuman has the dumbest username.
You should have no problems running 7 x64. I just used windows update and everything else is done up. GPU drivers are attained from LV2G though for better performance. The Dell quickset works too.

If your looking for say Wireless card drivers, or bluetooth etc check out http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/ as they have the latest driver and thus would cater for X64 users.
But on the Dell site you could just use the Vista 64~Bit drivers if they are available. But as others have said Windows update is pretty good at determining what are the best / newest drivers for your hardware... Most of the time lol. -
Thanks for the help guys. Finally got to doing the install and Windows update has taken care of a lot of it. The Windows drivers seem fine for the most part, and I installed the Nvidia 197.16 drivers.
One question, Does anyone use Scrybe by synaptics? I installed synaptics touchpad drivers for the touchpad, but then when I install Scrybe, it installs fine, but doesn't work. Upon startup I get a "Can't connect to synaptics touchpad" error. Not sure what it's all about, and I havn't had time to look into it. I'll play with it more after work, just looking to see if anyone has had the problem or any suggestions. -
I played with Win7 Ultimate x64 on my Latitude D830. It's a little similar to the Inspiron 1720. I ran in the touchpad issue and used the so called alternative Studio driver A01, R192617. It works like a charm and should also for the Inspiron 1720.

For Synaptics Scrybe I don't know it will help you. I didn't use or test it with. -
Thanks, I'll give that a shot.
Another issue I'm having is dealing with the SSD. Windows installs the Intel Ultra storage controller. How can I remove this? Everytime I remove it, it comes back. I think it may be preventing the TRIM command from being recognized. Is it the Win 7 default? I know on my M11x there is a default that isn't an intel driver. It works well with TRIM.
Inspiron 1720 and Windows 7 64 Bit. Drivers?
