I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. A few days ago, I woke up and started using my computer as normal, then went to take care of a few things. When I returned to use my computer maybe an hour later, it was shut off and could not be turned on at all. At first I thought maybe the battery was just dead, but nope, it has a full charge. Then I thought maybe I have a bad AC power adapter, so i unplugged the adapter from my computer and plugged it into the wall, and the green light on the box came on like normal. Then I plugged the adapter back into my computer and the green light on the box went out immediately, even though it was still plugged into the wall. My buddy has the same computer and adapter so i tried his and the same thing happened! has anyone ever heard of this happening? if so, please tell me there is something i can do to fix it! please? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Sadly this kind of problem seems to be less than unusual on a lot of current Dells... to make a long story short, your motherboard is fried. You will need to get it replaced; there's just about nothing else you can do.

Definately sounded like a dead mobo to me as well. Have you also tried booting on battery? Did you see any blue activity lights on the extreme right hand corner of your notebook? If there is, you still can do a diagnosis by removing both battery and AC and hold down the power button for 1 minute to drain all remaing static in your board. If however, then your mobo is screwed.
