I turned my Dell Inspiron 1720 on this morning and the caps lock keeps blinking. I have tried to figure out what is wrong but I have not found anything online. Can some one please help me.

Hmm, blinking... I need more information; can your 1720 do the basic stuff; like can it still type? Is other stuff still working well? Heck, can it even boot?

If you can, Run the inbuilt Hardware Diagnostics Test to see any faults with the system.

    Write back to me. Thanks.

no the only thing that the computer does is blink the light and then shutdown.

Does the caps lock blink 10 times before a shut down? If so, you'll most likely need to replace your motherboard.

EDIT: your ram could also be the issue. Try replacing your ram first (cheaper than a mobo replacement).

I have cheked the memory with another computer so it must be the motherboard. Thanks for your help.

Hmm.... I presume you CAPS lock blinks about approximately a few times right? I've seen that problem on various 1720 machines before.

    Just to make sure....

Unplug the AC and battery. Remove both the RAM modules as well.

Press the power button. This will help to loose all electrical static remains left in it. Hold it for about 10 seconds.

Then plugin the AC and turn on - it should automatically shut itself off again due to the absence of the RAM modules. However if it doesn't or if it blinks again then just power it down.

Remove the AC, then re-install both the RAM modules, then press the power button again for the same 10 seconds to loose all discharge especially from the RAM itself. Then plugin only the AC. Power it. See if it works this time round.

There may be a chance of a defective mobo like what David has mentioned, but I'd like to try to narrow down the problem component by component thoroughly, to see if it was one of them. ;)

    Good luck.

I'm exactly facing the same issue as yours. However it was totally opposite. I was looking looking for a solution through the forums when I came across this...... and it worked!!!! My crappy inspiron was up and running again!

    Thanks Mr. Human!
