I am looking into replacing the motherboard on my Inspiron 1720 (integrated graphics) with a refurbished one (UK434) that I will be ordering from one of the many online stores.

I am hoping that the hard drive will not require reformat, etc and will work just fine after motherboard replacment.

Are there any issues/steps that I should be thinking of while doing the replacement - e.g. would I need to something to the bios (including bios password)?

Background on why I think I need to replace the motherboard:
    ---------------------------------------------------------
Current motherboard on my 1720 laptop has some power issue - runs on battery but not with AC adaptor. I have tried multiple AC adaptors with same result.
Next I used multimeter to see if power is getting to the motherboard from the Power Jack and I can measure it upto certain points on the motherboard. So looks like some powerfet/capcitor, etc is blown on the motherboard and so I decided replace the motherboard.

If you are replacing with another Inspiron board you shouldn't have issues. Windows may want to reactivate again.

Best to start with the Service Manual which can be found on support.dell.com and punching in your service tag. It is a very detailed guide for dis-assembly. Also make sure you ground yourself, nothing like frying your new motherboard in the process.

While you are at it, I would look to repaste your CPU. The mounds of cheapo TIM is probably caked on the CPU now and probably isn't doing much of a good job cooling. Also while you have everything disassembled, blow out all the dust in the fan, heatsinks and heatfins.
