I guess they'll let the Studio 17 take it's place...
-
thats, strange. r they going to upgrade the low end lines as well then.
-
I'm gonna throw out a guess:The 1720 must have been REALLY low on their sales list.
-
the studio is not replacing it, there seperate likes of notebooks. I'm sensing an update coming soon. I wouldn't be surprized if all the computers get updates on tuesday when the inspiron mini comes out.
-
wait! did i miss something? the mini is coming on Tuesday? i read engadget everyday yet nothing like this popped up.
-
I just realized how apparent it is.
The inspiron 1525 will be replacing the 1720, the 1420 replacing the 1525, the 1310 replacing the 1420 - I don't exactly mean "replacing", just taking it's spot.
And if customers want a 17 inch laptop(desktop replacement), they can buy the Studio 17 which starts at only $750.
Inspiron 1525: $499
Inspiron 1420: $650
Studio 17: $750 -
or they might be introducing new products.

Heh, check this out. If you click 17" in the "Narrow Your Laptop Selection", the 1720 still shows up. However, if you click the "Choose" button, it takes you back to the Home and Home Office page. But, if you click the blue "Customize" link, you get to the configuration screen!

I noticed that they are the same price too. The plot thickens.

-
But only for so long!
-
I'm curious to see the outcome of the 1720.. -
im very glad i ordered mine at the end of june, they had a very nice "Top Pick" deal, i got mine for $1050 shipped.
i speculated Dell discontinuing the 1720 soon weeks ago, i guess i was right. they started running out of options and customizations.
im looking forward for the new Mini series, id sure would like to have a baby brother for my monstrous 1720. -
My Dell rep told me that the Studio 17's are replacing the Inspiron 1720's and he expects a Montevina refresh of the Studio series to happen soon.
-
-
Oh they will put out XPS notebooks, just... not yet.
-
It's odd that it's not up there anymore. There are still active coupons out for the Insipon 1720 that don't expire till August 13th
-
They might not be usable anymore since they run out also if there are a certain amount of people that purchase the system. The XPS coupons for example, expired yesterday even though they were supposed to expire on the 13th as well.
-
Yes, the Mini series ~ I think most are looking forward to the release also
I can't wait to have a *sweet, sexy companion* for my 1530 LOL

Sweet Sexy companion for a sweet sexy owner
yea considering the features in my sig i think its a good pricing. i just wish i got a significantly better processor. -
allfiredup Notebook Virtuoso
I noticed that the 1720 was gone from conhiguration options yesterday morning. I posted a very similar message in the Inspiron/Studio sub-forum asking if anyone had any additional information.
They are still offering the very similar Vostro 1700, as of this moment but who knows when it will disappear. Although the coupon codes don't apply to the Vostro models, the 1700 upgrades are discounted and $900 will build a solid system. The 256mb nVIDIA graphics option disappeared from the Vostro 1700 a few weeks back, so it's days are obviously numbered if options are disappearing.
The Vostro 1710 was introduced a month or two ago as the replacement for the 1700. I figured a new Inspiron with the same shape and design of the Vostro 1710 would show up very soon. In hindsight, it already made it's debut as the Studio 17. At least that's my assumption, does anyone know if the Vostro 1710 and Studio 17 are closely related? For instance, the new Vostro 1510 and the Inspiron 1525 are fraternal twins differing in color more than anything else.
Overall, it seems that Dell might be making some changes to realign product offerings to implement a product and marketing strategy that could make sense. Of course, we're left guessing because they rarely communicate anything to anyone! Unfortunately, the lack of information makes us wonder if they might just be winging it and they don't share their overall plan because it doesn't exist! =)
Here's where I see the three product lines (Inspiron, Studio, XPS) heading-
Inspiron- budget priced, lower-end hardware specs (integrated graphics only, limited display choices, low to mid-level CPU's at best). They will range in size from a 'netbook' similar to the Asus Eee and MSI Wind up to a 15.4" (by far, the most common size for notebooks).
Studio- sleek-looking multimedia/entertainment-oriented systems to be used as desktop replacements, mid-range, capable hardware specs (no Celeron/Pentium Dual Core processors or Intel integrated graphics, entry-level discrete graphics (ATI HD 3450 or nVIDIA 9200 GS) standard with a beefier graphics option as an upgrade), sizes of 15.4" and 17" for now, but would be the ideal spot for some of the various new sizes (such as Sony's 16.4", Toshiba's 18.4" Qosmio and HP's 20.1" HDX)
XPS- the M1530 could move up-market since it doesn't have to pick up where the Inspiron 1525 ends. Performance-oriented hardware only (CPU choices starting at 2.5GHz, higher-end graphics cards and even dual graphics card options, standard LED displays and at higher resolutions)
So, if they don't have a cohesive plan yet, they can just hit print as they're reading this....I'll send them the bill! =) -
I liked it back when I was able to configure an Inspiron 9300 very close to the XPS equivalent for much cheaper. Some people don't really care too much about the looks and prefer a powerful system. And some people don't care about the power but want only looks. So I can see the Studio line covering a very broad range because there are many out there that are looking for a good looking system but don't need dedicated graphics which runs down the battery quicker. I really hope they don't push the Inspiron line too far down. They seem to be doing so offering much lower cards compared to their XPS equivalents. It used to be 6800go in Inspiron or 6800go Ultra in XPS, 7900go GS in Inspiron 7900go GTX in XPS. Recently I saw the max config was a HD 3650 I think or 8600GT which is nowhere near what the XPS can be configured with.
-
I think that the XPS line could be doing a lot more than it is right now . . . keeping up with the latest and greatest graphics options and processors. The current XPS line seems seriously outclassed by a number of other companies current offerings.
In that sense, their could be much better mid range options being made available for the folks living with the 'nice, if not really sweet' cheap lines like the inspirons. I'll take nice hardware over a pretty box any day. At least having the option to have like, an 9600 gt OR an ATI would also be great. -

is the 1720 suddenly a hot commodity?

I am guessing this makes the most sense with what we have heard from actual Dell employees. The pieces are falling into place now... maybe. -
I hope to see a new line of inspiron and xps's soon!
you can still find the 1720 in the outlet department if thats what your lookin for
Inspiron 1720 no longer on dell.com
