I am considering buying a new 17R inspiron and was wondering if this computer can be upgraded to a glossy FHD 1080p screen. I know Dell doesnt offer this upgrade option but is this something that people have been able to do on their own?

I think I have heard of people upgrading XPS screens but not sure if the Inspiron line can also be upgraded.

I know some people will say just buy the XPS but my budget really doesnt allow me to spend that much. I can get a good 17R for about 600 and in the future upgrade to the 1080p screen if possible.

I appreciate the thoughts and advise.

Seeing both service manuals of the N7110 and XPS 17, looks like there might be room to fit it. Also you would need the LVDS cable for the 1080p display from the XPS 17. B+RGLED screen requires a special LVDS cable.

It seems like it can be done, yet your looking at around 250 to 300 to make it happen. Keeping in mind that it can be done "down the road" may be an advantage when on a budget but its not going to be easy. I have a 17R and the screen is actually not bad for getting work done. I could see why one would want the 1080, but in most instances the factory gets the job done.

On one note though, the factory screen does not have the best "Colors" and viewing angles. Perfectly fine in most situations, but just keep this in mind.

    Thanks for the reply guys.

It may not be worth it really to spend 200-300 on an upgraded screen. Its tough really because I have looked at just about every screen in person that I can find at Best Buy, Staples, ect. And honestly I am just not that impressed overall with most laptop screens. I think I am comparing them to the screen in the MacBook Pro ($2800 haha). I also saw a 16.4 inch sony Vaio that had a FHD screen at it was pretty nice. But again it was $1250 and wasnt 17.3 inch.

My original though was to buy a HP DV7 until I looked at one next to the Dell 17R side by side at Best Buy. The Dell just looked so much brighter. And the HP looked very washed out.

    Thanks Again guys.

At 200-300 you might as well just buy a nice external monitor and just live with the display you have now.

LCD quality is all luck my friend, LG Phillips is generally accepted as the best quality screens, AUO/Samsung some of the worst. For me all the Inspirion 1_R series models have too much blue bias which is a common issue with WLED screens these days, although the Windows default background is blue so most people don't really care.

Do they make different displays in the same series of laptops? I have noticed some Inspiron 17R's that I have seen seem to have a screen door effect over bright surfaces yet others may not. My laptop hunt has taken me through several brands. In the price range I am comfortable playing its really hard to find the right mix of display and performance. It seems like the resolution has increased over the last few years but quality hasnt as much.

I personally dont like the Matte screens. I notice the surface too much for my liking. I wish PC stores had more of a selection of laptops to check out. Other than Apple having the Macbook Pro to see I have only actually been able to see 1 laptop with a screen better than 900p... It was a 16inch sony at best buy for 1200. Really nice looking screen.

You can "upgrade" to a FHD 1080p screen without having to get the B+RG LED one.

However, as someone who has swapped screens, I can tell you even for $100-200 it's not really worth it unless you just HAVE to have full 1080p for playing Blu-Rays or something.

Generally, unless you get the screen from Dell, even if it's the SAME make and model number, you might have 'compatibility' issues. Sometimes this means the BIOS/boot screens don't show up, Windows might require you to re-configure the display settings EVERY time you start the system, and a whole bunch of other headaches.

Besides that, even if you have the upgraded GPU options like the 525M, a 1920 x 1080 screen has a whole lot more pixels for it to push compared to a 1600 x 900 screen. Sure, you can run games at 1366 x 768, but you can do that on a 1600 x 900 screen.

Overall it's just easier, not to mention cheaper, to buy a monitor that already has 1080p as suggested. Dell has sales on theirs all the time and occasionally great deals on the 18.5-22" for around $100, so pick one up and enjoy the bigger screen and higher resolution for less money if you so desire. Heck, you could even just get a 1080p TV with HDMI inputs.
