    Hi,

Anyone running 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR-3 1600 in their Inspiron 17RSE?

I Bought my 17RSE beginning of last july, and ever since, it is working perfectly. I replaced the HDD with dual SSD's and pretty much tinkered with it to the point where it suits me very well.

The only point i felt short, was the included Dell 8GB memory (2x4gb Samsung DDR3-1600). I am running short, because i am running a couple of VM on it, and at 2GB per VM, i run short of memory very fast... So this is the reason why i decided to jump to 16GB instead of 8GB.

I bought this kit of memory from Newegg.ca :

    Newegg.ca - CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10

Which was installed in a breeze and my system booted without a hitch... that's what i taught...

I encountered my 1st problem, when i closed the lid of the laptop... it went to sleep, but when i woke it up by opening the lid, it never work up, i had to power-cycle it to restart... and this is not a good sign.

All of a sudden, i started to get crashed, randomly on different applications, like sidebar.exe that would close without a reason. The windows index assesment doesn't work anymore, it crashes everytime i try to run it. And had crashed in all benchmark i tried to run... like 3dmark 11 and Vantage...

So i checked the new ram with MemTest86 for like 24 hours without finding any error what so ever on the Corsair ram... rebooted after test, only to see the same instability...

So i decided to put back the original ram, and BAM... no more problem, laptop is rock stable again, works like a charm, everything that was crashing with the new Corsair ram was working perfectly again... but only with 8GB.

I re-installed the Corsair ram, with extra caution to make sure it's inserted properly with good contact... only to get the same problems again.... i then decided to RMA the ram after reading the comments/reviews on Newegg about that particular ram.

My question to you all, does anyone run this type of Corsair RAM in their laptop (Corsair Vengeance 2x8gb 1600) without problem? Anyone running 16GB without problem of another brand of RAM?

After i get my replaced RAM from Newegg... if it still doesn't work, i might just get a refund, but still want to upgrade to 16GB... and i would like your input on this...

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Yes, I've installed the exactly same memory few days ago.
No problems so far, but it is early days yet. Only using laptop few hours a day, loading some applications. Will let you know if any issues.

Got my via Dell outlet. Added Samsung 830 SSD 256gb and moved 1tb hd to second bay.
Good spec for the money. Would prefer backlit keyboard...and 1GB ethernet (how silly is they put 100MB...still do not understand why?!).
But you can't have it all ;-)

Will probably test it thoroughly some time later, when I get spare time, as I will be using it for presentations and need very reliable laptop.

    Cheers.

Your crash could have been caused by the hibernation partition. 8GB of the msata drive has been marked as a hiberation partition and is controlled by intel (can't remember the name of the app, but it should be running in the sys tray). If your memory gets above 8GB and attempts to go into hibernation, my guess it's going to crash. You should turn this off.

I've been running 16 GB of Crucial ddr3 -1333 (pc10600) for a couple of weeks now. I did manage to increase my hibernation partition to 16 GB (i don't suggest this for the average user). However, after doing so my "time to come out of hibernation" went to about 20 seconds went consuming about 10Gb's of ram. Microsoft's hibernation was worse at closer to 30 seconds.

Hibernation is tunned off completely (both Intel and MS) on mine and I only use sleep mode.

I'm guessing Dell will not openly support 16GB on the SE due to have to resize the hibernation partition as well as the increased time delay.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Matchbx, but hibernation is long gone on my side too, i am using sleep only as well. And since the msata partitions are also long gone (i got rid of the HDD in my laptop and replaced it with dual-SSD's). So the msata was re-partitioned, and i am not using this at all anymore.

    Hi Rassal,

I have the same Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR3 1600 kit installed on my 7720 since the day I bought it. In fact the memory kit was installed by the company who sold the 7720 in Romania.

I haven't had any issues, problems or errors with my RAM for almost 3 months since I bought my 7720.

Sorry to hear about your issues and I'm sure your second RAM kit will work without any problems.

I'm really hope it's just the fact that rapid start partition is 8gb and it's has to match your installed RAM you need to reparation your mSATA drive. Or disable rapid start .
If this works please let me know I need more memory for my VMWare.

I recommend doing a memory test on your memory.
I just got a set and 1 tested really bad then. The replacement set, one was so bad I could not even boot in to the memory tester . (Ubuntu install cd has a memory tester)
Amazon as good as they are is sending another set.(set 3)
I hope at lest one works. They said I can make a working set if ones bad agian.

Bad ram will cause applications to close randomly or In my case severely damaged you get blue screen or computer will not boot or shuts down or locks up.
Because it can turn a positive bit a 1 to a 0 negative bit.
And with my luck so far . I recommend memory testing.
They have some defective ram on the market .

I have a dell Inspiron 17R-SE and got a really fast intel 520 series
    240 GB SSD.

I returned the memory long ago and got a refund especially when i checked out the reviews on newegg, it seems that particular type of ram has higher DOA than any other... so i bought something else, which is working perfectly.

The reason i took CL11 instead of CL9 is exactly to be up to spec with what Dell provides with the laptop... since i got the Vengeance ram, which is also better than CL11... and it didn't work, i didn't want to take a chance... so i bought ram with the exact same spec as Dell memory (which was 8GB of 1600 at CL11)... so i got 16GB of 1600 at CL11... and it works flawless, i don't really care for the speed of the memory, my system is rock stable, all i wanted, was more ram so i can run multiple VM's at the same time... 8GB was too restrictive.

Called dell and asked if it was compatible . He said yes hyper x is
He said 16 GB is not supported but is compatible. Not supported because of the Msata rapid start Configuration 8 GB partition. They don't want to walk you through the long task of repartitioning Msata drive.
I bet 32 will also work.

Did you get an error message like this..(see image).

The Third package they sent did pass the memory test Completely.
But then I got this error message. (Image)

The hyper X has made it through the tests, so far works grate.

THis, and all sort of instability like that, programs crashing, games not starting... and as soon as i placed back the original dell memory, it all stopped...

I tried this like 10 times, so working with the dell memory do all sorts of things, running benchmarks, runnning prime95, everything... system rock stable with dell memory.

Tried again and again with the corsair memory, and all sort of wierd things... never a blue screen, but unable to complete a benchmark, prime95 stopping threads, having all sort of error message sending crash result to microsoft, etc... i ran memtest on it, and it all passed... so i decided it was time to return the memory for a refund.

FYI, came across this thread after solving the debate whether I could upgrade my Dell Inspiron 17R to 16GB even tho Dell insisted its maximum memory was 8GB. I got a couple of 8GB Crucial sticks and upgraded to the latest BIOS and it runs like a champ. You can view the screenshots and various data on the discussion here Re: Inspiron 17R Special Edition Memory - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

    The memory I got was Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules CT2KIT102464BF1339

Note that I have the 17R not the special edition.

    Run's like a champ.
