I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R before realizing that I couldn't download videos directly from my Sony DV camcorder. Apparently, Dell does not offer firewire capability (IEEE 1394 ports/cards) in this model.

Does anybody know of a work around solution? I know the USB is too slow but I'm not aware of any outboard firewire interface that will allow me to do this.

    Anybody have a solution?

    Thank you,

Seeing as the 17r doesn't look like it has an ExpressCard slot, USB is probably your best bet. You could try to rig something to a mini PCIe slot with a bunch of expensive adapters (a la DIY ViDock), but I think that's just more trouble that it's worth.

As stated, without an ExpressCard slot, there aren't many options left but to rely on USB.
