Hi,
I'm new here.
I bought an Inspiron 2650, and would like to add some memory to it. If Aida32 is right, it has 2x128 (256) mb of memory in it. What is the most I can add?
Thanks,
....... john

Wow... Vintage!
I think the most you can add to this P4 machine is 512M... should cost around 4 bucks on ebay, plus $12 shipping... -
Hi Yaesu,
Thanks for replying. Do you mean a total of 512mb? I read somewhere that there are two areas were memory can be added, one is nearly inaccessible, and one is readily accessed. This would seem to be the case, since when I look at the installed memory I see one 128 mb chip. So, unless I'm preprared to take this machine apart, which I am not..... I am probably stuck with replacing the accessible 128 mb with 256 mb, since I don't think there is any such thing as a 384 mb chip. Is this how you would see it?

From Crucial:
Maximum Memory: 512MB
Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
Standard Memory: 128 or 256MB non-removable
USB Support: 1.x Compliant
The standard memory is installed in a socket which cannot be accessed by the end user. The second memory socket supports the end user upgrades. In order to reach the maximum you may need to have the standard memory replaced by an authorized service center
Shinnen, I'm not certain what you are using this machine for, but as you know, it's pretty... very... old. Budget permitting, it might be time for a new machine. -
Hi Yaesu,
Thanks for the suggestion. We're basically using it to transport pictures and videos to my mother-in-law, when my wife goes to visit her. So it will be fine for that.
So ....... the best I can do is to add another 128mb, i.e. replace the accessible 128mb chip with 256. Is that how you see it?

The other chip is probably under the keyboard and will be accessible after removing a couple screws.

Hi Robin,
Yes. I found a page which does say just that......... here >>> How to replace RAM in Dell Inspiron 2650 - Ars Technica OpenForum ........ so I may give it a try.
Thanks for your help.

I definitely think you'll be able to do this. Just order the chips, get the instructions and a little screwdriver, and lay it out on a table. Really, don't be worried about dismantling the machine a little more than usual, they're pretty modular.

Hi Jaesu,
Yes.... I'm going to give it a try. I'm a little wary about opening the laptop; I have done it in the past with disasterous results. Although I'm fairly technically minded, having built several desktops, fiddling with the innards of a laptop is another kettle of fish. However...... first I have to get the ram. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again,
..... john
