    Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 with Win XP, SP2. I had issues with the DVD combo drive (detected DVDs, but not CDs) and the service guy had asked me to replace it. So, i replaced the old one with a new DVD combo drive.

Within a few days of replacement, i noticed that the DVD drive in the windows explorer is getting disappeared and hence i am not able to play any CD or DVD. However, if i restart the laptop, it appears again and i'll be able to use it. After i remove the disk and working in laptop for a few hours, again noticed that this drive getting disappeared. I troubleshooted the DVD drive and it says, the drive is working properly.

Pls help/assist to resolve this problem. Pls let me know if you need any other details.

    thanks
    laks

That is a weird problem. Try reinstalling the DVD rom from device manager. Device manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives > Select your drive > right click > uninstall > Right click on the root node (your computer name) > Scan for hardware changes.

Is the ODD disappearing during use? I had a similar one-off problem recently when I was trying to read something. I forget what it was, but it caused the drive to disappear. The redetect hardware in the previous post didn't find the drive, but a reboot did.

If the ODD is disappearing while not in use, I would suspect a connection problem. Maybe the service technician didn't fix the connector properly. It is usually easy to remove the ODD and replace it, which might fix any loose connection.
