Hey all thanks for looking at this thread now onto the problem...
Inspiron 5100 stop charging the battery whenever it wants to. I know about the DC Jack problem the 5150 has and I don't think this has that it works great with the AC adapter plugged in. I have already tryed another battery and same results. I ordered a new AC adapter and I am (albeit impatiently) waiting for the arrival. So in the meanwhile I thought I'd ask here if anyone has any ideas (And if the AC adapter doesn't work)????
I have already done a search and the only relevant item I found was something about the LVC14A chip issue and was wondering if it could be that?

    Thanks all :notworthy:

hmm random charging can be nearly anything, I had issues similar with a Tosh from the same time period as your computer. It turned out to be a mainboard failure, twice. it could the AC adapter(I doubt it), or it could be the charging circuity... the list goes on... but if an AC adapter doesn't work maybe it's time for an upgrade? in reality you could sink more money into this unit than it's actually worth and never find the problem (about 100-200$ depend on your specs).

I doubt this is a problem with the AC. It is more likely a motherboard issue. It could be anything on the motherboard, but at that point you'll need a replacement motherboard regardless. And yeah, especially with a Northwood-based machine like the 5100, I don't think it's worth fixing if it's a motherboard issue.

Thanks for the replies and here is one more anomaly that is happening...
When it's plugged into the AC adapter and the battery is installed if it says that it's not charging it won't see the AC adapter at all. So once the battery drops I have to shut down. Then if I remove the battery and boot back up it will run OK without a battery at all.
