On 6/21 I sent my Inspiron 5150 back to Dell for service, the repair was supposed to take a week. Today I called Dell, well DHL lost my computer, they delivered it to a wrong address last Wednesday. If DHL cant track my 5150 by tomorrow morning Dell will send me a replacement system.
My question is if Dell does send me a replacement system what would be a reasonable request for a replacement system?
These are the specs for the lost 5150:
Pentium 4 3.06ghz with Hyper Threading
512 MB Ram
60 GB Hard Drive (I still have this, I removed it before sending it for repair)
UXGA Display
8X DVD drive
nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
Built in WiFi
10/100 Ethernet Port
56k Modem
Windows XP Pro
This was pretty close to top of the line when I bought it in January 2004. The only thing that wasnt maxed was the processor, the 3.06 was one step below the 3.2ghz, I could have got 1GB of ram, and an 80gb hard drive, and a dvd/CDRW drive.
Any help is greatly appreciated since the order for my replacement system will be placed tomorrow morning.

An E1505 would be good. A T2300E processor. 60 GB SATA HD, 512 RAM, CDRW/DVD drive, WXGA screen, 3945 wireless. XP pro. ATI X1400. That is about the equivalent if not better specs.

I hate to say this, but if dell does replace your system, they will most likely configure a system similar to your previous one. They do this with the complete coverage warranties where laptops are completely destroyed. I highly doubt you'll be able to choose the specs and everything on it, and get it for free.

Sorry I didn’t mean to imply that they were going to spec out a new system to my custom order. I was just trying to get an idea of what their policy was and what I could reasonably expect.
Does anyone know if they would issue me a credit if I asked, so I could get something more up to date and inline with what I would like rather than just having them send me a new laptop? -
I don't know if they will or not, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them. Normally they give you two configurations, and you choose which you want. At least that is how it has worked in the past. I could be completely wrong too.

Thanks all, for the replies

They will just send you another 5150 like they did me.
The one they sent me did not have hyperthreading or a 7200rpm hard drive like my original did, but I was so sick of messing around with them that I just told them to go die. It took them weeks to even agree to send another one, and then when they did, they promised as good or better and sent worse.
I got the replacement and the line out for the speakers did not work. I sent that one back in AND told them that the specs were not up to snuff and they freaking did nothing about it.
All told, I think Dell fed me about 20 lies. "We promise blah," "we understand your frustration, we'll make it right." Lie after lie after lie.
No more Dell.
Also, I don't want to just pick on Dell here, I'd also like to mention that there is no worse shipping company out there than DHL.
A crackhead with $20 in his pocket on a Segway traveling down the road 1 block from a known crackhouse has a better chance of properly delivering your package than that clown DHL outfit. -
Dell is going to send you a system similiar to what they lost. You will not be able to tell them what you want. -
Dell Inspiron just went up in smoke.
My stepfather's Laptop, a Dell Inspiron 5150, just went up in smoke, and he asked me to help him find a replacement. I know what I would suggest, an inexpensive no-name brand portable. Problem is, he bought the Dell for its' specs, not that he ever used it to it's full capacity, as well as the warranty. So now, he wants me to track down a replacement model from Dell, and Dell alone.
Now that I have read this (year old) thread, I see that their is not much hope. Never the less, I would like to hear some input. I doubt they would send me a refurbished 5150 after all the lawsuits re: heatsinks, so, could someone, anyone tell me what are they likely to foist off on me, and what would be the real inheritor of the specs, nowadays? Something must have come out since the E1505. -

I can't believe any 5150's are actually still working! I doubt Dell has many of those left. Maybe you'll get a new system!
