Hey all ! I've been debating about whether to upgrade my old 6000 with a new hard drive and 2 gigs of RAM ( for those who don't know that's the max this laptop can take ) or wait until the 'new' June models come out and see if something in the 17" really sparks my interest. My question is does anyone know off hand if my bios in my 6000 will see the full 250 or was there a limitation back when these laptops came out. This laptop has been phenomenal and NEVER given my one single problem even with me abusing it with Vista Ultimate installed :p . I love the Dell products and i can't justify buying a new Inspiron 1720 as aesthetically it's not much different than my 6000 and i love the look of the XPS 1530 but it's 15" and if Dell would just make a 17" in the same design i would be all over it as i don't like the 1730 at all and with all the issues they have i can't justify the cash. I'm not a gamer but still want something with great a great screen and big since I'm not lugging it around as it's a desktop replacement.

thanks all for any input !!

as long as it is a IDE disk you can upgrade, but keep in mind that upgrading your old 6000 notebook is an endless road. because sooner or later it just isn't going to cut it anymore so you will have to buy a new notebook.

    so to answer your question

can you upgrade your notebook - yes
should your spend all that money on it - i wouldn't do it.

I am pretty sure that the hard drive limitation was not hardware related but OS related, which Microsoft fixed with XP sp1. In your case since your using Vista, 250GB should not be a problem.
Ram is cheap so upgrading to 2GB's of ram is a good idea since your using Vista. Vista will be a lot snappier with 2GB's.
The Inspiron 6000 with a Pentium m is still a very capable laptop in my opinion. If you plan on keeping the laptop a while longer, I think the upgrade is well worth it.

in my opinion and that is all this is, so you can take it for what its worth... but..

upgrading to a 250 hdd as long as it is an ide drive would be worth it, (I would search pretty thoroughly online and off for prices though), and would make vista better too as it takes up a lot of room on the hdd. putting 2gb in your comp would be worth it too, I know when I upgraded the inspiron 9300 for my brother I got the memory from crucial.com, and its awesome, and only cost about $52 shipped.

also on a side note you mite wanna check out this post. as you may like these laptops when they come out from dell, and supposedly they are going to come out fairly soon, but who knows!

and I would say that with an upgraded hdd and more memory you got yourself a new laptop, although if you do decide to do the upgrade which shouldnt cost you anymore than $200 at most (unless your looking for a 7200 rpm drive) and then i would say about $250.

and then you end up buying a new laptop, you will have a very capable and reliable back up laptop!

here is the link for you.

Hello, I was googling around for an answer to my problem. I came across this thread, and I found out it was worth a try.

My Inspiron 6000 has 2,5gb DDR2 PC4200 Ram installed. I purchased another 2gb to replace the 512 module I have, and the computer automatically shuts down before passing the bios-screen. I know its "technically impossible" since the maximum amount of memory should be 2gb, but my computer support atleast 2,5gb. How come? And does anyone have a solution for me? I want 4gb on my Inspiron 6000! I asked dell and they said it was possible, thats why I purchased it.

Sorry if this is offtopic, but it seems to be ok since others allready talk about the amount of RAM.

    regards
    Norwegian

not sure about the ram, but I have installed a 250GB in my 1505. Works just fine.

2GB is all I have had in mine for ram though....

    boscocosta,

I know this post was placed a long time ago but I would like to know if you replaced your hard drive with the 250 gb HDD successfully. My Inspiron 6000 HDD just died on me and would like to replace it with a WD 250 GB HDD.

    Thanks
