So I downloaded and ran a bios update for a 6000 (old laptop that i am reformatting). It has been shutting down for over 4 hours now. No idea what to do. Should I manually turn it off and try the bios update again or will that screw things up at this point?

As long as you don't turn it off while it says "updating BIOS", the actual BIOS update should not have started and you should be alright. Nonetheless, I've never actually had to force-shutdown a Dell during any part of the BIOS update process, so I'm not 100% sure.

thanks. I forced it off and then restared. The bios never installed. So I logged in and tried it again and it works now. Thanks. THought the bios update might be going on during shutdown - kind of like some updates.

Yeah, the BIOS shouldn't actually be updating itself until you get that white screen that tells you so. Good to know for future reference that you can do a force-shutdown like that though.
