Inspiron 6000 VS Inspiron 600M

Im looking at a new notebook for work & home. This is my first notebook purchase so iam a little nervous on making a wrong decision. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Work: Internet , Word Perfect, Excel, Powerpoint, running at least 3 programs at the same time.

Home: Internet, some work at home, digital photos, music, and minimal on-line gaming.

I want something portable that's not to heavy so i can take it anywhere without the hassle. Should i sacrafice the 600M with the 14.1" monitor size VS the 6000 with a 15.4" monitor size? Is it really that big of difference? Which would I be happier with? is 4.5 lbs VS 6.75 lbs a big difference when lugging around a notebook on ocassion? Your feedback is much appreciated.

I would go with the 6000 becuase it is newer than the 600m. But the only thing like you said was portability that not the best with 6000 comparing that to the 600m.

 

i would go with the 6000. i have one; use it everyday and take it with me everyday. it's not that bad, but i'm not going on hikes or anything with it.

the 600 is the older dell styling (blue/grey) and also has some reported heat issues (check threads for this topic).

as well, the newer dell construction (of the 6000 and other newer styling (silver/white)) is a pretty sturdy notebook. i can pick up my 6000 by the corner and there is no flex or anything.

however, 6000 doesn't have legacy ports, only usb2.

The Dell 600M has only been kept alive due to its popularity. I'd recommend getting the i6000 because it incorporates the latest technologies.

 

Go with the 6000, its a much better and more powerful system with pci express and better graphics cards, as I recall the 600m only has an integrated graphics card solution. The 6000 is also built much more durable than the 600m plus you get a nice 15.4 inch widescreen with the 6000.

 

For Excel and photo work, the widescreen 15.4" Inspiron 6000 will be a lot better. If you get a good notebook case, especially a backpack, then you won't notice the extra 1.5-2lbs. The Inspiron 600m is based on older technology, except I think the Centrino mobile technology is the same in either notebook. The 600M has 4X AGP graphics with up to 32MB (or 64MB) of dedicated RAM on the extremely old ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. The Inspiron 6000 comes with full PCI Express x16 graphics with up to 128MB of dedicated RAM in the ATI X300 graphics card.

Additionally, the Inspiron 6000 has the features of full DDR2 RAM and it gets pretty good battery life (even when compared to the 600M).

 

I get like 6 hours of battery life on my I6000 with the 9cell battery.

 

6 hours is kind of rare but maybe 5. You would emagine that the 600m has a longer battery life wouldn't you?

 

i have both the 6 and 9 cel for the 6000;

the 6 cel gets a little over 4 hrs and the 9 cel gets right around 6 hours
