So I ordered an Inspiron 6000 for my sister and I'm going to do a reinstall when it gets here. I ordered the xp disk too. The only thing Im worried about is the drivers dell have listed online.

There's so many listed how do I find out which ones I should install. And how uptodate is the drivers on the cd?

My cd wasn't up-to-date at all.

You should have 1 download from each: BIOS,chipset, video, communication, audio, input , removable storage.

Networking devices-- you could have 2 or 3 depending on hardware. Ethernet is the broadcom drive, your network card, and if you have bluetooth, you'll need the bluetooth driver.

Applications, display devices, printer devices -- are optional.

    IDE/EIDE -- only if you have a 5400rpm hdd.

System/Configuration -- notebook system software --> this will run one time and fix conflicting hardware problems.

Display devices is for external monitors that you bought from dell. For the LCD that is attached to your laptop, the video card is the correct driver.
