My fan always starts out very quiet, and as the computer is on for awhile it gets louder and louder. Is this just random? I'm not running any particular program while the fan increases volume. Is there a way to control this?

    Thanks,

    Ben

I8kfanGUI works great for the 6000, and there are different speed settings for the fan so yes it does get louder depending on how hot things are which would make sense as you use it over time. fanGUI will let you monitor the temps of your cpu gpu and hd and let you manually adjust the fan or set up profiles. the only problem is that the 6000 doesn't have a second fan although I8kfanGUI has support for a second fan so i get a pop up saying that the second fan can't be changed or something. other than that, i'd say google it and download it

It is not random. I notice it more when I have multiple programs running and the optical drive is running. It also occurs when I run it while it sits on the bed.

You need to elevate the laptop a little to let all the hot air out. The machine is overheating

it's not necesarily overheating, the louder noise is the fan switching to the higher speed to cool it more (usually under higher cpu stress i.e. using the optical drive, encoding mp3s, gaming, multitasking). do make sure that the vent and entire underside of the laptop are getting sufficient air in general to cool it adequately, and as before I recommend 18kfanGUI to monitor and manage all of that since cooling is important to the life of your hardware.

Thanks for the replies. I downloaded I8kfanGUI, and what is a good temperature to keep the computer? Right now it is 82 degrees, and the fan is slow.

    Thanks,

    Ben

the fan (with an updated BIOS) has multiple speeds... low, med, high. before the BIOS update it only had low and high. it is always on, but runs at low (which on my computer is whisper quiet); when necessary, it kicks up to med to keep things cool, i've never heard it kick up to high on it's own, only when i force the speed to 'high' via fangui.

i run mine around 90-100 F for the CPU when just browsing, chatting, downloading, listening to music. Gaming or heavy CPU load it gets up to 140-150F. I have the x300 so that adds quite a bit of heat and the GPU usually stays around 100-130F and the hard drive is usually about the same. how do you get the medium fan settings?

you need version A09 of the BIOS.

my cpu runs anywhere from 70-80 F when doing normal stuff.

Does the computer still kick on the higher fan speed when it wants to with this program running?

    with Fangui running?

with Fangui you can set profiles for fan speed vs. temperature

How long have you been owning it, THe fan is louder also because of DUST!!! It happened the samething with my friend's old laptop Dell1100 with P4 2.2gz. The fan ran loud like a jet airplane .. after I open the inside, and use the air duster and blow all those dust away. ( it's like a spray paint can ) - you can buy this at the computer store or other places. ( this tips is from dell forum and it works)

Another reason for it besides put your laptop on your bed is your computer might be infected by spyware or add ware, normally you can scan this and remove it completely in Safe Mode start up (press F8 when start your computer - the menu will appear). Use Counter Spy to scan it is my best advice http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm When you run counterspy, remember to activate all the FULL SCAN Options , such as registry, deep scan.etc.

    Hope this help.

with the program running, if you have either a profile or manual override running then the computer won't control the fan, the program will. if the program is just on for monitoring purposes, then the computer still has control of the fan speed.
