    Hi,
    I have a friend's Inspiron 6000 from 2005
The laptop turned off by itself once and since then, it refuses to POST.

I do suspect some CPU power issue.
    - The boards can be powered and shutdowns with the power button.
    - HDD is detected and HDD LED turns off after detect.
    - Only the Power led remains open
    - No Image nor backlight on screen
    - No access to BIOS
    - PSA boot (Fn+Power) give Scroll Lock LED ON
I spoted a black burned zone around what I think is a diode. I removed it and try to mesure it but I'm not equipped to have an exact figure of what it is.
The marking on it is "SR".
I can find tehe same coponent on a few more spot on the board where there is some power regulators around.
I've posted some pictures so be easier to understand what I'm talking about .

I you could help me revive theis laptop, my friend will be very very Happy

Does anyone have or could do a picture of his own INSPIRON 6000 Motherbord back so I could compare the bad IC orientation ? (requires full tear down of laptop)

    Thanks in advance

If you've got a burnt component like that, you're going to have to replace it or get a while new motherboard. K-TRON probably knows where to get little bits and pieces like this if you want to go down the first route.

Don't quite understand what you're saying about the orientation... did you unsolder it, and re-solder it after forgetting to note the orientation? Why would you re-solder a burnt component and without knowing which way it goes?

I see people are giving me answers

As I mentionned (I'm not a native English speaker). The burning is just the little red circle.
Since I put the component back in place I did not turned the computer on again. I'm looking for a picture of the board to be sure about the orientation of this part (if I get a new one)
I resoldered it for the purpose of the picture and not loosing it neither.

I'd like to know what is that "SR" component so that I can replace it by the same or an equivalent (even non SMT as I got plenty of room around that area).

Commander Wolf : Thanks for the info about K-TRON but I google it and does not give me any obvious link :-(

ipkonfig : Thanks for this answer but the board is supposedly already dead so I is not more dead than before. Might just be that or the MAX1485 to be replaced and it could work again.

The brown stains around the burning is just soldering residues that makes it unclean.

K-TRON is a member of the site... I dunno what you'll get if you Google his name :D I'd tell you to PM him, but you don't have enough posts to do so, but he'll probably come around on his own. Still can't really tell you much about the orientation, though; I don't have an Inspiron 9000 to take apart for you...

    LOL,
did not really hit my mind K-TRON would be a site member nickname

I'll wait a bit and see if he comes around before PM him. I'm not in a hurry at all.

    Thanks again :)

    Hi,
My goal is not to buy but to fix. Considering the price of a new machine, I'd rather have it for spare parts an/or sell it as spares :)
However I already looked on Ebay but as long as I don't know if its related to the MB and/or the ATI X300, I'll not purchase both and end-up with a $400+ fix for a 4 yo machine...
