A lot of people are having problems coming out of standby on the Inspiron 6000s (pressing power button does nothing). Before I rip my hair out trying to fix the problem, can you guys do me a favor and reply if you CAN come out of standby? Also tell me what is the difference between your system and mine. Here are my specs:
Windows XP Pro SP2, all MS updates
Intel Pro 2200bg wireless card with latest drivers
Standard 6-cell battery
Norton Antivirus
Zone Alarm free
BTW - I've tried EVERYTHING that Dell support suggested. I'm thinking this is a hardware issue with the wireless card, or battery. Please help!

forgot:
6000d
xp home fresh install, NONE of the ms updates
2200bg + drivers from dell's site
6 + 9 cel batts
nav
no zone alarm -
i should just edit the posts, but whatever
please note that if you are going into standby by closing the lid of your laptop, you do not need to press the power button after opening the lid. opening the lid is the action that will bring your laptop out of standy, if you press the power button after you open the lid, you are either turning off your laptop or putting it back into standby
display properties > screen saver > power > advanced... to see how xp is configured to respond to closing the lid / pressing the power button -
i have had exactly zero problems of any type with any functionality on my 6000

Is standby your problem or hibernation? Dell has a well known problem with coming out of hibernation. The only solution is to turn it off.
Contol Panel> Power Options> Hibernate tab> uncheck Enable Hibernation.
If it is standby that is the problem, do a google search or check the dell boardss.
Turning off hibernation has solved others with simular problems. This leads me to believe that hibernation is the problem. -

drumfu - Thanks. I will try closing the lid, and opening it.
bugmenot - I have hibernation disabled. I've tried google and the dell boards to no avail.
Others - please post your experiences -
I have a 6000D thats about 2 months old. I absolutely love it except for the said problem w/coming out of hibernation. Disabling hibernation isn't fixing the problem, so i would like to find out the reason this happens. I've posted messages on this board and Dell's board, but no one seems to know what the problem is. That being said, I still think its a great laptop.

I have no issues coming out of hibernation. I reboot when I install software or uninstall software. I shut down once a week to "clear the system". Coming out of hibernation takes about 15 seconds versus a boot up from "off" of ~45-50 seconds.
I felt my problems were due to the presence of the McAffee Software. No problems ever since I uninstalled that. I am a loyal NAV user.

I have had 0 problems. The way I have my computer setup is closing lid does not cause the computer to go into standby. I have the computer go into hibernation only on battery after 45 minutes. standby 30, hard drives off 15 and 10 for turn off monitor.
You might want to check all your programs and see if they are disabling the standby/hibernation. I know i had a few programs say things like usb connections can't force computer out of standby.
Other then that all I can say is open the lid wiggle your mouse./ touchpad clicking the buttons and see if that wakes it up.
You could always reinstall the quick set program. I believe thats what controls alot of things like media buttons standby and what not not to mention the fn functions.

I FIXED IT!!!
I uninstalled the Dell Quickset app that came with the laptop and now I can come out of Stand By! Thanks for everyone's suggestions, especially 'mikeakajb'. You and someone from BroadbandReports got me thinking about which apps are controlling nic settings and also power management settings. I'm guessing Dell's quickset (ver 3.6) doesn't work well with the Broadcom nic or the Intel 2200 nic.
I am now a happy camper -
I have a 6000 -
Reformatted w/XP Pro w/ ATI card - all latest driver and security patches.
I have seen three weirdnesses related to suspend and resume - hibernate is diabled. Generally it works 99% of the time but sometimes...
1 - System resumes but wireless access is gone. HW manager shows wireless card there but Intel sw can't find card band wifi light is off. Switched between XP and Intel manager but didn't seem to make a diff.
2 - System resumes but screen is blank - drive is spinning, power light is on solid but screen won't display - have to reboot.
3 - Rare bluescreen during resume. Reboot and its fine.
Interstingly what has helped most after much f-ing around is uninstalling quickset. Native but simpler XP power management seems to work better.
I keep hoping for a BIOS/driver update that will fix everything - I can dream on I guess.
Hope this helps.
