I left my Inspiron 6000D for an hour or so and when I returned the screen was suddenly dark. I thought maybe I had unplugged it by accident and battery went low, but no, I checked and it's plugged proper.

I boot it up and I see the Windows logo and then the desktop for maybe ten to twenty seconds and it suddenly goes very very dim. I can still see the icons, but it's DARK. Plugged in, or on battery, it doesn't make a difference.

I checked the power settings and standby/hibernate/etc are all set to Never (when plugged in) or 30 minutes plus (battery) so what could be going on here? It was working fine earlier today.

    Help is appreciated!

backlight might have died. Do you have warranty?

No. Warranty expired a few months ago. Is replacing the backlight something that is going to cost me several hundred dollars? And should I pay Dell to it, or can a local shop (or, say, Best Buy's service dept.) handle the job?

Update: The repair place I took it to charged me $10 to diagnose the problem. It is the backlight, not the inverter. So it looks like I have to send it to Dell and pay $500 (plus tax) to have the whole screen replaced. Half the original cost of the laptop. It didn't even last a year and a half.
