    Inspiron 600m System Exchange Replacement System

    Hi all,

    I have owned an Inspiron 600m for about three years now, and recently the system has been acting up and Dell has decided to initiate a System Exchange on the current system.

    I know that the 600m is an older system, and for that reason I asked the representative on the phone the exact model number of the system that they are planning to exchange it with, but nobody can seem to provide a firm answer.

    Has anyone system exchanged a 600m? What are the common systems that these are system exchanged with?

    You may not be able to get Dell to tell you what model they'll replace it with, and Dell may not know, but in my experience with two replaced machines Dell replaces obsolete systems with much nicer refurbished ones of the same type. You could guess that Dell would choose machines of the same screen size readily available on Dell outlet - right now those include the Inspiron 1420 and 640m/E1405 - but you have no guarantees.

    I would get the replacement. Then if the new machine is too big/small/heavy compared to your 600m, insist on another replacement with the appropriate characteristics.

    Dell customer service will give you what you ask for if it is within reason (and sometime even beyond what is reasonable) if it is within their power, that is if they have an option for doing so within their system (e.g. they may be able to issue a system exchange but not specify the replacement). They have a remarkably good and consistent record for doing so. And if not, there are plenty of well documented and usually successful ways to get them to follow through.

    My name is Todd and I'm with Dell's online outreach program. Unfortunately, we can't tell you what model of system that you will receive since it depends entirely on what we have in stock at the time. The department responsible for selecting that replacement system will try very hard to match up the specs you had on the original unit, including size and weight. If they aren't able to match it exactly they will then move to a "like or better" process where they'll find a system similar in spec with one or two upgrades. They'll never downgrade any of your specifications intentionally, but they're human and mistakes do happen.

    Once they do select the replacement system an associated order number will be assigned to it and you can use that order number online at www.Dell.com to review the specs of the replacement system.

    I have also been dealing with the Dell Resolution Center to get a system replcaement for my troublesome Inspiron 600m. I have been quite dissappointed with my interactions with the Dell Resolution representative. The first replacement order was a Inspiron 1520 with an integrated video card and Core 2 Duo at 1.66GHz, whereas I previously had a GPU. I complained about this and also the added weight of the new system (I wanted a 14" laptop), so my rep cancelled the order and placed a new one.

    This new system was slightly better with a GPU and 14" screen; however, it came with a Pentium Dual Core processor at 1.46GHz, whereas my current system as a 1.6GHz Pentium M processor. From my perspective, this is not "equivalent or better" than my current system, as I am getting dual cores, but reduced processor speed. It's a nice upgrade, but my primary concern is that single threaded applications running on one core will be slower.

    The new system definitely will not be "twice as fast" as my Dell rep claimed. My Dell rep said there was nothing he could do, and that the system would be shipped out soon.

    How can I esclate this issue even further to get a system with a decent CPU with a speed greater than 1.6GHz?
