Okay, I just got a 600m and I've noticed it runs fairly warm. GKrellm in Linux says it idles at just under 50 Celsius and I've seen it go all the way up to 72 during a compile of Firefox.

The CPU is a Pentium-M 735 (Dothan, 1.7 GHz). I had a 500m before this that had a Banias 1.3 Ghz; its normal idle temperature was about 32 degrees and the highest I ever saw it go was 62. I know this is a faster chip, but doesn't the Dothan use less power than the Banias?

What's weird is that the fan is blowing cold air through all this...is it just not cooling the poor CPU? I just got this and don't want it to die of overheating already. Anyone who knows how to help, please do...this is making me really nervous.

If it's blowing cold air out then the heatsink isn't making good contact with the CPU.

Since you just got it, might want to call up Dell and see if they can get someone to reseat the heatsink. If you're comfortable opening it up and tinkering around, you can open it up yourself and make sure the heatsink is screwed in well.

The temperature it reaches actually isn't much of a concern (I ran Prime95 overnight with my CPU in the mid-80 C), but getting it cooler will mean the fan won't have to come on as often.
