Inspiron 6400 - Sound Driver Issues

Hello all,

I recently reinstalled windows XP on my Inspiron 6400 (format and install). However, when I tried installing the sound card driver, I got the message - "This is not the correct audio driver for this system. The installer will now exit." The driver that dell has suggested for my system is at the following link: http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R171789.exe

If anyone could help with this, I'd really appreciate it. I tried to google the problem and it seems that it is a common occurence but wasnt able to find a definite solution anywhere.

Did you try the Creative driver?

Failing that, you could also try the Vista variants of both drivers. Back on my D830 I remember at least one instance where an XP driver wouldn't work on an XP install, while the equivalent Vista driver would...

 

Yep, tried all the above, no luck

 

Try put in your service tag on the driver page and see if it has any different drivers.

 

The service tag gave me the driver that I linked in my original post. That didnt work either.
