Newbie here. Ordering a new Inspiron 6400 as a replacement for my old Toshiba Satellite. My needs are modest... internet, MS Office, DVD watching. But from time to time, my husband (software developer) might borrow this and he is insisting on the 7200rpm drive and XP (not Vista). Here's my deal, can anyone tell me if this pricing looks reasonable?

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5200 (1.66GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows® XP Home
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    80GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    Integrated Audio
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

    Price is $864 plus tax.

    Thanks for any input!

The price is good, but you may consider going for dedicated graphics and T5600 proc, to make it a bit more future proof. Apart from that, the price is suitable for the configuration.

    Thanks for the feedback.

The T5600 adds $75 to the price.

Is the 128MB, $49 below a sufficient upgrade?

    128MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 HyperMemory™ [add $49]
    256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™ [add $99]

I think you can do better on the price.....check out this E-valu code (under small business NOT home user): BNPCEFD and see.

Thanks Niel4lmore... I believe BNPCEFD is a Vista config and I need XP.

I've been using BNPCEXP and BNPCUXP and I have a $50 SB catalog code.

imo, the total price is very reasonable. However, how much is the 7,200 rpm 80GB Hard drive upgrade? You can upgrade that yourself and use the other one for an external hard drive. It's about 4 screws. This might save you another $50-$75.

I think you are overpaying based on the 6400 I just bought for my daughter. But that's just me...

I agree about the dedicated graphics. The ATI x1400 is quite a nice card. I have no complaints...the processor you have chosen seems fine. I would call Dell to order and try to get an extra discount
